Hawks Show Positives In Last Minute Exhibition

HARRISONBURG, VA. – In a contest that was thrown together less than 48 hours ago, the Chowan Men's Basketball team competed hard against Division I foe, James Madison, in a 100-76 exhibition loss on the road on Sunday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Jonathan McFall led the Hawks in his debut with 20 points including 15 in the second half.  Elijah Hill scored 14 points and hauled in a team high seven rebounds.  Jaylen Dilliard and Jaedon Willis chipped in with nine points each.

The Hawks matched up well with James Madison as Chowan outrebounded the Dukes 42-41.  Chowan was unable to see the ball through the bottom of the net shooting 36% (22-61) from the floor.  The Hawks converted 23-32 attempts from the charity stripe.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Elijah Hill put the Hawks on the board after a quick 5-0 run by James Madison.  The Dukes would answer at the other end before Hill posted a putback and Jaylen Dilliard finished off the three-point play with the layup and free throw to even the game at 8-all just 16:50 remaining.

The Hawks would keep pace with the Dukes as Elijah Hill and Jaedon Willis knocked down back-to-back treys before the media timeout.

Out of the break, JMU went on a 10-0 to push their advantage to 26-14 before the under 12 media timeout.  Elijah Hill connected 1-2 from the stripe for the first point for the Hawks in over four minutes.  Jaylen Dilliard connected from deep to end the scoring drought from the floor with a three-pointer.  Tahkey Williams added a layup to cut the deficit to 28-20.

JMU continued to flex their muscles going on a run down the stretch, doubling up the Hawks 42-21 over a 4:22 stretch.  The Hawks would pick up points at the stripe as Trejvon McFail and Jamal Thomas connected from the stripe.  Jaylen Dilliard edged the Hawks closer with 2-3 from the stripe.

Jonathan McFall connected from deep that ended a scoring drought from the floor to cut the deficit to 42-30.  McFall added a pair from the stripe following a Dukes bucket.

Second Half:

Out of the break, both teams would find baskets rather easily as Jaedon Willis, Jamal Thomas and Jonathan McFall post buckets early.  JMU would answer each attempt to maintain their lead.  Elijah Hill knocked down a triple to cut the deficit to 51-41 with 17:13 remaining in the contest.

JMU countered with a 7-0 run to lead 58-41 before the media timeout.  Elijah Hill connected twice from the stripe to slow the Dukes' run.  Jaylen Dilliard went 1-2 from the stripe before Tahkey Williams rebounded and put the Dilliard miss back. 

The Dukes extended their lead to 68-46 with 12:34 to play.  Jamal Thomas connected from deep and Jaedon Willis picked up one from the stripe as the Dukes held a 71-50 advantage.  Jonathan McFall added the next seven points for the Hawks including a three-point play as JMU's lead was pushed to 82-57.

Jaedon Willis dialed up two from the stripe along with six more points from Jonathan McFall kept pace with the Dukes, 88-65.  Calvin Ahoume would enter the scoring with a pair from the stripe.  McFall swiped an inbounds pass and handed off the steal to Xavier Young for the acrobatic layup.  Young finished off the three-point play.

Paul Whitby knocked down a trey for his first bucket of his career.  Thomas Miles would pick up his first collegiate point at the stripe as Latrell Lloyd followed up Miles' second attempt with a layup.

JMU would take the exhibition 100-76.

UP NEXT

Chowan is scheduled to open their season on Wednesday, January 13 against Barton in Conference Carolinas action at home.  Tip-off is slated for 7:00pm.
