Hawks Gut Out Victory Over Converse

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Chowan Women's Lacrosse team picked up a tough fought victory over Converse in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon on the road.

Misten White led the Hawks with five goals and five caused turnovers. Tashana Barnett scored four goals and three assists to go with eight draw controls. 

Leia Cabradillia scored one goal and added an assist.  Jordan Nicholson scored a goal, while Brooke Woods-Pennell tallied an assist.

Mallory Dunker picked up the win in goal with eight saves.

Converse scored half of their goals from the free position spot.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Mallory Dunker kept Converse off the board early with a save.  Leia Cabradillia looked to put the Hawks up with a free position shot but was saved.  Brooke Woods-Pennell would find Cabradillia for the first goal of the contest just 6:35 into the match.

Brooke Woods-Pennell tried to make it 2-0 for the Hawks with her free position shot but it was denied by the Valkyries' keeper.  Misten White's attempt would also be pushed away.

Converse evened the score at 1-all, but Misten White gave the Hawks the 2-1 advantage just 90 seconds later as Leia Cabradillia found White for the tally.

The Valkyries evened the score midway through the half with an unassisted goal.  Mallory Dunker made two more saves before Tashana Barnett scored on the free position to lead 3-2.

With 5:20 remaining in the half, Misten White scored an unassisted woman-down goal to lead 4-2.  Brooke Woods-Pennell tried to increase the lead for the Hawks but her attempt was denied.

Second Half:

Converse closed the gap to 4-3 early in the half converting off a turnover.  Tashana Barnett quickly pushed the lead back to two, 5-3, after securing the draw control and converting the free position shot.

Tahvae Burton caused a turnover leading to a goal for the Hawks as Misten White scored unassisted hat-trick goal to lead 6-3 early in the half.

After Mallory Dunker made the initial save, Converse would score on a free position to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Midway through the half, Tashana Barnett would find Misten White for the goal to put the Hawks up 7-4.

Mallory Dunker tried to keep Converse off the board with initial saves.  Converse cut into the deficit with a pair of free position goals to trail 7-6 with 17:44 remaining.  Dunker made another save to keep the Hawks in front.

Tashana Barnett would use that momentum to score a woman-down goal and push the lead back to two, 8-6, with her hat-trick goal.  Barnett found the back of the net once again in the woman-down situation to lead 9-6 just 33 seconds later.

The Valkyries continued to stay close scoring on another free position attempt to trail 9-7 with 12:24 remaining.  Just over a minute later, Tashana Barnett found Jordan Nicholson for a goal and force a timeout by the Valkyries.

Converse converted another free position attempt with 6:34 remaining to cut the deficit to 10-8.  Brooke Woods-Pennell looked to increase the lead with a free position attempt but was turned away.  Mallory Dunker made a save with 2:38 remaining to keep the Hawks in front 10-8.

Misten White sealed the win with a goal off an assist from Tashana Barnett with 2:12 remaining.  Converse would find the back of the net late but was not enough as the Hawks held on for the win 11-9.

Chowan takes a step out of Conference Carolinas action as the Hawks host Ferrum on Sunday, March 1.  Opening draw control is at 2pm.
