Dilliard Has Hot Hand Against Warriors In Win

CENTRAL, S.C. – Jaylen Dilliard broke the Chowan Division II single-game scoring record by not missing a shot from the floor as the Hawks hold off Southern Wesleyan to snap a six-game slid, 92-89, on the road in Conference Carolinas action.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Jaylen Dilliard scored a Chowan Division II best 38 points on 11-11 shooting from the floor knocking down 8-8 three pointers.  Dilliard tied the school record with a perfect field goal percentage and made three pointers.

BJ McLaurin added 18 points on 7-8 shooting.  Khalil Ridges tallied 16 points and Michael Kelly posted 14 points.

Chowan shot a blistering 71.4% from the floor on the way to a single-game record.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Michael Kelly and BJ McLaurin put the Hawks on the board early with a pair of buckets.  Khalil Ridges and Jaylen Dilliard knocked down a basket each to lead 8-7.

Both teams traded points back and forth with Michael Kelly and Jamal Thomas with baskets before Jaylen Dilliard connected from deep to lead 15-12.  Dilliard added another triple before the Warriors regained the lead 19-18.

Jaylen Dilliard added a pair from the stripe before Khalil Ridges knocked down a three pointer to lead 23-22 with 10:57 remaining.  BJ McLaurin added the next four points and a layup by Michael Kelly added a layup to lead 29-24.

After a pair from the stripe by Jaylen Dilliard, Southern Wesleyan took a 34-31 advantage.  Khalil Ridges connected from deep to even the score.  Dilliard added a layup in transition and found Ridges for a triple to lead 39-34.

Michael Kelly converted from the stripe and Tahkey Williams added a layup to lead 43-39 into the locker room.

Second Half:

Jaylen Dilliard kept the Hawks on top with a pair from the stripe and a three pointer.  SWU continued to stay in the contest to lead 52-50 until a basket by Michael Kelly and BJ McLaurin.  DIlliard knocked down a triple to lead 56-52 with 15:46 remaining.

The Hawks tried to pull away as Jaylen Dilliard continued his hot shooting.  Michael Kelly and BJ McLaurin aided in the attack with a bucket.  Dilliard knocked down four triples in a row to push the lead to 74-60 with 10:01 remaining.

BJ McLaurin gave the Hawks their largest lead of the contest, 76-60, with a layup.  The Warriors would cut the deficit to one 77-76, with a 16-1 run over the next six minutes.

Michael Kelly connected from the stripe to halt the run.  BJ McLaurin picked up four points from the line to push the lead to 83-76.

With two seconds left on the shot clock, Jaylen Dilliard found Khalil Ridges in the corner for the triple to lead 86-78 with 1:41 remaining.

SWU went on a 9-2 run to trail 88-87 with under 30 seconds to play.  BJ McLaurin tallied the lone basket for the Hawks.  Khalil Ridges put the Hawks up one possession with a pair from the stripe.  Jamal Thomas swiped the ensuing inbounds and converted from the stripe to ice the contest.  The Warriors picked up a basket at the buzzer.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home for the final two games of the season as the Hawks host Lees-McRae on Saturday, February 22.  Tip-off is slated for 4pm.
