Chowan Split Opening Day Twinbill With Cobras

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Chowan Baseball team picked up a split on opening day against Coker in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon on the road.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Jake Kane led the hitting barrage with five hits.  Kane had two doubles and four RBI.  Jared Fry picked up three hits including a double and a home run.

Noah Cartwright, Brock Cross, and Tyler Jones hit home runs as well.

Shane Rademacher picked up the win in game two tossing 5.1 innings.  Robert Burns, Slade Cowan and Timothy Blackman tossed scoreless innings.  Blackman picked up three strikeouts in 1.2 innings.  Cowan tossed 2.0 innings without surrendering a hit.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 6, Coker 8

Travis Cross was the first base runner for the Hawks drawing a two-out walk.  Jack Kane picked up the first hit with a single.  Both would be stranded in the top of the first inning.

Chowan would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Justin Winslow singled to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Noah Cartwright would single home Winslow for the lead.

Wyatt Beakler had his stuff working early allowing a walk and four strikeouts in two innings.

Coker tallied a run in the bottom of the third inning as a walk and stolen base aided the run.  The Cobras took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of hits and a pair of miscues by the Hawks.

Tyler Jones evened the game in the fifth with a solo blast to left center.  Jared Fry followed up with a double to right but was left stranded.

Coker took control of the game in the bottom of the inning with a six run frame to lead 8-2.  The Cobras registered four hits and was helped with an error.

The Hawks looked to cut into the lead in the seventh inning as Noah Cartwright started the inning reaching on an error.  Tyler Jones walked and Travis Cross singled to load the bases.  An infield fly and a strikeout ended the threat.

Chowan struck for four runs in the eighth inning on three home runs.  Brock Cross started the rally with a two-out home run to left field.  Noah Cartwright went back-to-back with Cross.  The rally continued with a single by Tyler Jones.  Jared Fry homered to right field to cut the deficit to 8-6.

Jack Kane doubled to start the ninth inning but was unable to get past second to end the contest.

Game Two: Chowan 11, Coker 3

The Hawks would take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Travis Cross was hit by a pitch with two outs.  Jack Kane reached on an error allowing Cross to move to third.  In a double-steal attempt, Cross would score as an errant throw down to second went into the outfield.

Tyler Jones tried to scratch across a run in the third inning drawing a one-out walk.  Jones swiped second and moved to third on a passed ball but was left stranded.

Two errors in the fourth inning allowed a run to score for the Hawks.  Jack Kane started off the inning with a single to left.  Kane moved to second on a throwing error and to third on a ground out.  A throwing error on Trenton Lee's batted ball allowed Kane to score for the 2-0 lead.

Chowan opened up the game in the fifth inning with a four run frame.  Noah Cartwright reached on an error and swiped second.  Tyler Jones would draw a walk before Jared Fry's single scored Cartwright.  Travis Cross picked up an infield single to score Jones.  Jack Kane doubled to right field to plate Cross and Fry to lead 6-0.

The lead increased in the sixth inning as Tyler Jones was hit by a pitch with one out.  Jones moved all the way to third before Jared Fry and Travis Cross drew walks to load the bases.  Jack Kane and Justin Winslow picked up RBI singles.  Patrick Krack doubled home a run to lead 10-0.  Winslow scored on a wild pitch.

Coker put together five hits in the bottom of the sixth to break up the shutout and plate three runs to trail 11-3.

Timothy Blackman finished off the game on the mound striking out three of the six batters he faced.

Chowan wraps up the three-game series with Coker with a single game on Sunday, February 2.  First pitch is at 12pm.
