CU Football Week Four: Bearcats And Duchenne

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Football team will make the nearly 900-mile trip to Lebanon, Ill. as the Hawks take on McKendree in a non-conference game.

COACH TO CURE MD

During the game, Chowan's coaching staff will be wearing Coach To Cure MD patches on the sidelines in efforts to raise awareness for Muscular Dystrophy.  Tackle Duchenne helps support families with individuals battling the Duchenne disorder.

Coach To Cure MD, is a one-day, nationwide awareness building and fundraising event that will be held on September 28.  Over the last 11 years, Coach To Cure MD has raised over $2.1 million for Duchenne research.

NOTEABLES FROM GAME THREE

Chowan faced a 27-0 deficit at half.  The Hawks outscored Shaw 47-21 in the second half and overtime.

The Hawks posted 140 total yards in the first half and exploded for 299 in the second half while holding Shaw to 106 total yards in the half.

Bryce Witt threw for 201 yards and four touchdowns but had three interceptions.

Deshaun Wethington posted his second straight 100+ rushing yard game with 106.

The Chowan defense that was on the field for 20:45 in the first half limited that time in the second half to 13:45.  The Hawks caused four turnovers with three interceptions and a fumble recovery.  Chowan also had a blocked field goal in overtime.

RECORD UPDATING

Bryce Witt threw for four touchdowns to take over the top spot for most passing touchdowns in a career with 57.   Witt is second all-time in career passing yards sitting behind Stover (5,865) with 5,322.  Witt sits with 939 yards rushing and can become the first QB to rush for 1,000 yards.  He sits in 11th for most career rushing yards.

NCAA DIVISION II STATISTICS

Bryce Witt's seven touchdown passes in a single game ranks at the top for most touchdown passes in NCAA this season.  Witt is 3rd in the country in TD passes (11), 18th in passing efficiency (165.0), and 4th in Points responsible for (78).

Imeek Watkins' five receiving touchdowns in a single game ranks first in the country this season.

Deshaun Wethington leads the country in yards per carry with 10.06 yards an attempt.

Josh Berry, Arthur Radford and Kyree Burns rank 12th in the country in interceptions per game (0.7).  Connor O'Brien ranks 12th in the country in tackles per game at 11.7.

Chowan is ranked in the top-25 in several categories:

BATTLING THE BEARCATS
McKendree is in search of their first win of 2019 sporting a 0-3 overall record.  The Bearcats finished the 2018 season with a 6-5 record.

With the departure of Reece Metcalf, the Bearcats quarterback from last season, McKendree is searching for points averaging 16.3 points a game after recording 35.7 points a game last season.  Turner Pullen is the guy taking the snaps this season tossing 508 yards and five touchdowns.

Jace Franklin has been bottled up for most of the season with 120 rushing yards.  Leading the defense is Ricco Gipson with 32 tackles.

IN THE SERIES

This marks the second meeting between the Hawks and Bearcats.  Chowan took the first-ever meeting last season in an exciting back-and-forth shootout.  Chowan posted a school-record 709 yards of total offense and Bryce Witt threw for a school record 439 yards.
