Chowan Battles Tough Against UNCP

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – All the scoring happened in the final 17 minutes of action as the Chowan Women's Soccer team was handed a 2-1 loss against regionally ranked UNC Pembroke at home on Wednesday afternoon.

Sierra Gonzalez netted her first goal of the season.

Chowan's defense held firm for 73 minutes despite the flurry of corner kicks by the Braves.  UNCP totaled 13 corner kicks.

Stephanie Quintanilla recorded two shots in the contest.  Lynzie Hulle recorded three saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes of play.  UNC Pembroke had chances early but was deterred by the Chowan back line.

UNCP put a shot on frame in the 11' but was saved by Lynzie Hulle.  Rhianna Ballard posted a shot in the 13' for the Hawks but was unable to find its way past the Braves' goalkeeper.

In the 22', Stephanie Quintanilla ripped a shot towards cage but was denied.  Lynzie Hulle made another save in the 40' to keep the score level.

Second Half:

Both teams settled in during the final 45 minutes of play.  UNCP recorded three corners in the first six minutes of the half but were turned away.

The Braves benefitted from an aggressive play by the CU keeper as an attempt bounced off the keeper's hands on found a waiting foot in the 74' to put UNCP up 1-0.

Just over two minutes later, Chowan was shown a yellow card and granted UNCP a penalty kick.  Lynzie Hulle choose correctly but was buried into the bottom left corner out of her reach.

Chowan continued to fight down the stretch as Sydney Henderson was tripped inside the box in the 81'.  Sierra Gonzalez converted the penalty to close the gap to 2-1.

The Hawks' offense was unable to maintain possession long enough to find the equalizer as the final whistle blew.

Chowan steps back into Conference Carolinas play against Southern Wesleyan on Saturday, September 21 on the road.  First touch is slated for 1pm.
