Bender Posts Program-Best, Hawks Clipped By Pirates

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Lacrosse team came up just short against Division I Hampton, 18-16, at home on Wednesday afternoon.

Slater Bender kept the Hawks in the contest with a program-best 32 saves.

Patrick Egan and Austin Lee produced six points on the afternoon.  Egan tallied five goals and one assist, while Lee scored four times and two assists.

Noah Holloway found the back of the net four times.  Alex Clabaugh picked up four points with one goal and three assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Hampton scored two goals quickly in the opening two minutes of play to lead 2-0.  Patrick Egan put the Hawks on the board with an unassisted score.

The Pirates would lead 3-1, before Patrick Egan closed the gap to 3-2 midway through the period.

Neither team would score in the final half of the period.

Second Quarter:

Hampton pushed their lead to 6-2 before Noah Holloway cut the deficit in half with an unassisted tally.  Less than 30 seconds later, Patrick Egan found Jason Jenkins II on a man-up goal to cut the Pirate lead to 6-4.

Following a Hampton goal, Patrick Egan netted his hat-trick goal off an assist from Alex Clabaugh.  Hampton tallied two more goals in the half.  Egan scored his fourth of the half off a dish from Austin Lee with under a minute to play to trail 9-6 heading into the half.

Third Quarter:

The Pirates continued to keep the momentum with two goals out of the half to lead 11-6.  Austin Lee found Jaxon Martin for a goal, and Lee scored himself.  Patrick Egan scored a man-up goal off a pass from Quintin Bender to cut the lead to 12-9.

Another two goal swing by Hampton was countered by unassisted tallies by Noah Holloway and Austin Lee.  The Pirates would lead 15-11 heading to the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Hampton put distance between them and the Hawks after a Noah Holloway score to lead 18-12.

The Hawks would mount a comeback scoring four goals.  Alex Clabaugh started the run with an unassisted tally.  Clabaugh would find Austin Lee to trim the deficit to 18-14.  Noah Holloway continued the run with a goal.  18 seconds later, Clabaugh found Lee for a goal for the final tally of the contest.

UP NEXT

Chowan hosts Lees-McRae on Saturday, April 20 for senior day.  Senior festivities will begin at 12:45pm.  Opening face-off is at 1pm.
