Hawks Grounded By Flying Fleet In Sweep

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Chowan Baseball team suffered their first Conference Carolinas series sweep against Erskine on Saturday afternoon falling in the doubleheader finale.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Marquise Lanier went 4-6 at the plate with a triple, two walks and a RBI.

Nick Rose went 3-4 at the plate in the nightcap. Nicholas Lees went 1-1 at the plate and a walk in the early game.

Noah Cartwright recorded a sacrifice bunt in the first contest, while going 1-2 with two walks and a RBI in the nightcap.

The Hawks committed four errors in the nightcap leading to 15 unearned runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 1, Erskine 11

Nicholas Lees picked up the first hit for either side in the top of the third inning on a bunt single.  Erskine would load the bases in the bottom of the inning but a fly out ended the threat.

Chowan took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning as Marquise Lanier reached on an infield single.  Lanier swiped second before Jared Fry drew a walk allowing Lanier to move to third on the passed ball.  Noah Cartwright laid down a sac bunt allowing Lanier to score the lone tally in the contest.

Erskine answered in the fifth inning with a single and a sac bunt.  Anthony Jefferson teamed up with Jack Kane to get the runner at the plate.  The next batter produced a triple to even the score at one aside.

The Fleet would continue their attack in the sixth inning hitting two home runs leading to 10 runs to lead 11-1.

Marquise Lanier would triple to start the seventh inning but two strikeouts and a groundout ended the threat.

Game Two: Chowan 7, Erskine 21

Chowan jumped on the board in the top of the first inning as Nick Rose doubled down the line with one out.  Marquise Lanier singled home Rose for the early 1-0 lead.

Erskine countered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning as an error prolonged the inning.  The Fleet pushed their lead to 8-1 in the second inning as back-to-back errors allowed Erskine to continue the inning.

The Fleet pushed across three runs in the fifth inning to lead 11-1.  The Hawks picked up two runs in the sixth inning as Nick Rose and Brock Cross singled to start the inning.  Marquise Lanier drew a walk to load the bases.  A wild pitch allowed Rose to score before Jared Fry's RBI groundout plated Cross.  Noah Cartwright and Nicholas Lees drew walks to load the bases with two outs but were left stranded.

Chowan clawed back into the contest in the seventh inning trimming the deficit to 11-7.  Nick Rose singled up the middle and Marquise Lanier drew a walk with one out.  Jack Kane loaded the bases with a walk before Jared Fry and Noah Cartwright drew walks to plate two runs.  Nicholas Lees walked following a pitching change to plate a run.  Anthony Jefferson reached on an error allowing another run to score.

Erskine tacked on to their lead in the seventh with two runs and added eight more in the eighth inning to take the victory 21-7.

Chowan takes a step out of league action to face former CIAA foe, Virginia State, in a doubleheader at home on Tuesday, April 2.  First pitch is scheduled for 2pm.
