Chowan Softball Comes Up Short Against Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Chowan Softball team slipped to Erskine in a non-conference doubleheader on the road on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Haley Cooper led the Hawks going 3-6 at the plate.  Brittany Parson picked up her second home run of the season with a three-run homer in the night cap.

Mackenzie Taggart recorded two hits.  Lindsey Stigler posted a RBI.  Beth Walker drew three walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 1, Erskine 11 (5 innings)

Chowan struck first in the opening frame of the contest.  Haley Cooper drew a walk to start the afternoon.  Beth Walker singled before Jesse Gentry was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Lindsey Stigler hit a sacrifice fly to score the opening tally of the contest.

Erskine took the lead in the bottom of the inning with a two run frame on three hits.

The Hawks looked to even the score in the second inning as Mackenzie Taggart and Haley Cooper picked up two-out singles.  Beth Walker drew a walk to load the bases but was left stranded.

The Flying Fleet increased their lead to 5-1 in the second as four straight hits plated three runs.

Chowan loaded the bases in the fourth, but was unable to scratch across a run as Mackenzie Taggart singled to lead off the inning.  Jesse Gentry picked up a single and Kelsey Sonntag reached on the hit by pitch.

Erskine used the fourth inning to put distance between them and the Hawks with a six run inning on four hits and an error.

Game Two: Chowan 3, Erskine 5

Haley Cooper started off the contest with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch.  A ground out pushed Cooper to third but was left stranded.

Erskine took the lead in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run.  The Flying Fleet expanded the lead in the second on a two-run home run, 3-0.

Donya Salman and Beth Walker drew a walk in the third inning.  Erskine pushed their lead to 5-0 on two hits in the third.

Chowan was able to rally in the sixth inning as Jesse Gentry and Lindsey Stigler drew a one out walk.  Brittany Parson hit her second home run in as many days with a three-run shot to close the gap to 5-3.

The Hawks looked to keep pushing in the seventh inning.  Donya Salman drew a walk but was thrown out at third following a Haley Cooper single.  Beth Walker drew a walk before Cooper and Walker moved up sixty feet on a passed ball.  The Hawks would be left stranded in scoring position.

UP NEXT

Chowan will look to bounce back next week as the Hawks travel to the site of the 2019 CIAA Softball Championship in Salem, Va. in the Salem Invitational on March 8-10.  The Hawks face West Liberty on Friday at 5pm.
