Tigers Spoil Weldon's Career Night At Home

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Danielle Weldon posted a career night as the Hawks were unable to fight off Salem in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening.

Danielle Weldon posted a career-high 33 points and tied her own school record with 20 rebounds.  Weldon tallied 16 offensive rebounds.  Weldon's 33 points is the second most behind former Hawk standout, Talaya Lynch (37), in 2013.

Mariah Coker added 10 points.  Joanne Williams and Kaylah Henderson chipped in with nine and eight points respectively.

The Hawks were unable to connect from deep in the second half going 0-13.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Danielle Weldon tallied the opening two buckets for the Hawks.  Kaylah Henderson added four points and Jahkeria Bagby added two from the stripe to give the Hawks a 12-8 lead early.

Salem would roar back to even the score at 12-all and take the lead at 16-13.

Jahkeria Bagby, Joanne Williams, and Danielle Weldon added points at the stripe to hand the lead back to the Hawks, 18-16.

After a small run by the Tigers, Mariah Coker knocked down a triple and Danielle Weldon added a three-point play to give the Hawks a 24-22 lead.

The Tigers would hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to lead 25-24 after the opening 10 minutes of action.

Second Quarter:

Mariah Coker put the Hawks on the board along with two from the stripe by Jordan Pettaway before a three-pointer by the Tigers stretched the lead to 33-28.

Jada Lee would break the seal on the basket after neither team was able to score.  Jordan Pettaway hit a layup to trim the deficit to 34-32.  Lee knocked down a three-pointer to even the score at 35-all.

Back-to-back three-pointers by the Tigers was countered with a three-pointer by Mariah Coker and two free throws by Danielle Weldon.  Weldon added a layup with 42 seconds left the trim the deficit to two, 44-42.

Salem led 49-42 at the break.

Third Quarter:

Danielle Weldon tallied the first eight points of the half for the Hawks to keep the deficit manageable, 55-50.  The Tigers would stretch the lead to 13, 63-50 midway through the quarter.

Danielle Weldon continued to score with a layup before a fastbreak bucket by Kaylah Henderson trimmed the deficit to single digits.

The Hawks went on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to four, 69-65 with under a minute to play in the quarter.  Joanne Williams notched five points during the run with a bucket by Jada Lee and Kaylah Henderson to force a timeout.

Danielle Weldon added four points at the stripe to trail 72-69 heading to the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Danielle Weldon and Mariah Coker teamed up for a bucket each to give the Hawks a 73-72 advantage just 1:55 into the quarter.

The Tigers would take the lead back with a three-pointer, 77-74, before two points from the stripe trimmed the deficit to one.  Olivia Gaither allowed the Hawks to regain the lead, 79-78, with a three-point play.

Danielle Weldon and Olivia Gaither matched the Tigers on the offensive end, 84-all, with 1:23 remaining.

Salem would get the go-ahead bucket with just over a minute to play and held off the Hawks at the free-throw line for the 92-85 win.

Chowan travels to face CIAA Northern Division rival, Elizabeth City State, on Saturday, February 6.  Tip-off is at 2pm.
