MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team was unable to overcome the second half spurt by St. Augustine's in CIAA action on Monday evening at home.

Gus Rowland led the Hawks with 23 points, adding six assists and five rebounds.
Michael Kelly tallied 17 points and six rebounds, recording six points in the final minute of the contest. Timothy Bing and Demetrius Sanders chipped in with 12 points each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
After four quick points by the Falcons, Chowan countered with an 11-0 run. Trejvon McFail started the run with a triple followed up by two free throws by Timothy Bing, a layup by Gus Rowland and Demetrius Sanders before a tip-in by Michael Kelly.
Demetrius Sanders threw down a dunk in transition off a steal by Timothy Bing. Bing knocked down a jumper from the elbow to push the lead to 16-7.
The Hawks would pick up the next five points at the stripe to keep the lead, 21-15. Deon Joyner knocked down a three-pointer before the Falcons answered on the other end.
St. Augustine's evened the score at 26-all but a Gus Rowland three-pointer handed the lead back to the Hawks 29-26. Timothy Bing connected from deep and Rowland notched a layup to give the Hawks some breathing room, 34-28.
Xavier Young exchanged three-pointers to end the half, 37-31.
Second Half:
The Falcons started chipping away at the lead cutting the deficit to 39-37 after a Demetrius Sanders layup. Trejvon McFail and Timothy Bing added a jumper to keep the lead at 44-38.
St. Augustine's would use a 22-4 run over the next 4:42 to take a 60-48 lead. Gus Rowland ended the run with an old-fashioned three-point play.
Gus Rowland traded a three-pointer with the Falcons before a 7-0 run by the Hawks cut the deficit to four, 65-61. Timothy Bing knocked down the three-point play and Gus Rowland connected from deep during the stretch.
St. Augustine's pushed the lead to eight, 71-63, but Michael Kelly's three-point play cut the deficit again. Kelly and Demetrius Sanders would add a bucket to trim the SAU lead down to five, 75-70, with 2:09 to play.
After free throws by the Falcons, Michael Kelly knocked down back-to-back triples to cut the lead to one, 78-77, with 19 seconds remaining.
Two turnovers forced the Hawks to foul late as the Falcons held off the rally for the 83-79 victory.
