Chowan's Season Closes With Slim Loss To Claflin

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team rallied from a nine point deficit to even the score but unable to take the lead in the CIAA Tournament against Claflin on Tuesday morning.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Mariah Coker posted a game-high 23 points to lead the Hawks.  Danielle Weldon and Kaylah Henderson netted 10 points each.

Joanne Williams finished with seven points and 11 rebounds.  Jordan Pettaway tallied six points, while Jada Lee finished with five points and six rebounds.

The Hawks shot 52.9% from the floor in the third quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Danielle Weldon put the Hawks on the board early going 1-2 from the stripe.  Jada Lee knocked down a triple before Olivia Gaither picked up three from the stripe to lead 7-2.

Claflin went on an 18-6 run to take the quarter, 20-13.  Mariah Coker knocked down a jumper as the remaining four points came at the stripe.

Second Quarter:

After a bucket by Claflin, Joanne Williams put the Hawks on the board with a put-back.  Kaylah Henderson tallied a pair at the stripe and Jada Lee added a layup to cut the deficit to two, 22-20.

Danielle Weldon posted a put-back before the Panthers pushed the advantage back out to nine, 31-22.  Claflin led by double-figures until Mariah Coker knocked down a three-pointer and a layup.

Jordan Pettaway connected from the floor as the Panthers led 39-30 at the break.

Third Quarter:

Mariah Coker knocked down a three-pointer to start the scoring for the Hawks.  A jumper by Coker and Danielle Weldon cut the deficit to five, 42-37.

Claflin responded to push the lead back to double-figures, 48-37, before Danielle Weldon's layup sparked a rally.  Mariah Coker and Kaylah Henderson connected from the floor and Weldon hit a put-back to trim the deficit to three, 48-45.

Kaylah Henderson produced a layup and Jordan Pettaway knocked down a three-pointer to even the score at 50-all.

The Panthers led 52-50 heading to the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Kaylah Henderson posted a layup to even the score back up.  The Panthers would go on an 8-2 run with Mariah Coker scoring the lone basket.

Mariah Coker and Joanne Williams tallied a basket each to keep the deficit at four, 62-58, but the Panthers would push their advantage with a three-pointer.

The Hawks made the Panthers earn their points at the stripe and was able to get back into the contest with a Joanne Williams layup and a Mariah Coker three-pointer, 68-65.

Claflin would put the Hawks away with the final free throw attempt to take the victory.

NOTABLES

Danielle Weldon finished off her career with 975 points, eighth most in program history.  Weldon hauled in 686 rebounds for second best in CU's division II era and fourth best all-time.

Jada Lee capped off her career with 892 career points, 11th best all-time.  Lee finished with 372 assists, division II record, along with 217 steals, fourth all-time and second in division II history.
