MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team suffered an 83-77 loss to Virginia Union on Senior Day at home on Saturday afternoon.

Chowan was led offensively by lone senior, Demetrius Sanders. Sanders recorded 24 points and seven rebounds.
Gus Rowland tallied a double-double with 17 points, 11 assists, and seven rebounds. Xavier Young tallied a career-high 15 points.
Timothy Bing chipped in with 12 points. Chowan shot 31.3% in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Virginia Union jumped out to an early 7-2 lead as Timothy Bing notched the first points of the contest for the Hawks.
Chowan would go on a 19-2 run to take the lead 21-9. Gus Rowland sparked the rally with a layup. Demetrius Sanders would knock down a jumper off an assist from Rowland. The run continued with a Xavier Young layup in transition and a Sanders layup.
Xavier Young, Gus Rowland, and Demetrius Sanders knocked down back-to-back-to-back three-pointers. Sanders added a layup to give the Hawks the 21-9 advantage.
Timothy Bing, Gus Rowland, and Brandon Mayhan added layups to keep the Hawks in the lead by double-figures, 27-16. Rowland knocked down a three-pointer and Xavier Young added a layup on the fast break to push the lead to 32-18.
Timothy Bing knocked down a three-pointer and Gus Rowland added two from the stripe. The Panthers cut the deficit to six, 37-31, with a 9-0 run. Bing added a layup and Michael Kelly went 1-2 from the stripe.
After a pair of free throws by the Panthers, Demetrius Sanders took the inbound and knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer to lead 43-33 at the break.
Second Half:
Chowan and Virginia Union traded baskets in the early portion with Michael Kelly adding a layup and Demetrius Sanders tallying a three-pointer. Another three-pointer by Sanders kept the Hawks in front by double-figures, 56-45.
Demetrius Sanders hit a jumper and Xavier Young knocked down a triple before the Panthers went on the attack. VUU went on a 12-0 run to lead 64-62 with 7:26 remaining.
Demetrius Sanders evened the score with a dunk and Michael Kelly connected from deep to hand the lead back to the Hawks. Gus Rowland recorded a layup to push the lead to 69-64.
The Panthers responded with a 15-3 run to lead 75-71 with 2:07 remaining. Gus Rowland knocked down a pair from the stripe. Xavier Young completed the three-point play and added two more free throws.
VUU salted away the contest at the stripe to take the win, 83-77.
UP NEXT
Chowan slipped to the sixth seed in the Northern Division with the loss. The Hawks will play the seventh seeded Johnson C. Smith on Monday, February 25 in a play-in-game at the CIAA Tournament in Charlotte.
The Hawks lost to Johnson C. Smith on January 10, 61-54, on the road.
