Chowan Picks Up Much Needed Divisional Win

LINCOLN, PA. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team rallied from a 13 point deficit to pick up the much needed win in CIAA Northern Division action on Thursday evening against Lincoln (Pa.) on the road.

NOTABLES

Chowan moves to 3-6 in the Northern Division into a tie with Virginia State.  The Hawks hold the tie-breaker with the Trojans in point differential in head-to-head meetings.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Mariah Coker stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals to lead the Hawks.  Jada Lee added 11 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

Danielle Weldon chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds.  Brianna Copeland tallied seven points off the bench.

Joanne Williams hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds.  Chowan forced 18 turnovers to offset the 9-20 from the charity stripe.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

The Lions started off the contest with four quick points.  Mariah Coker would score the next five points to lead 5-4.

Danielle Weldon added a jumper following a three-pointer by Lincoln.  The Lions went on a 7-0 run before Mariah Coker added a layup.

Joanne Williams and Teylahna Green posted a bucket each as Lincoln led 22-13 at the buzzer.

Second Quarter:

Olivia Gaither knocked down a jumper to start the quarter.  Lincoln stretched their lead to 29-16 before the Hawks went on a 13-2 run to close the gap to 31-29 at the intermission.

Chowan started the run with five points from the stripe.  Olivia Gaither tallied a jumper and Jada Lee knocked down a three-pointer.

Brianna Copeland ended the scoring in the half completing the three-point play with two seconds left.

Third Quarter:

Chowan started slow but Joanne Williams grabbed the offensive rebound and putback.  Jada Lee evened the score at 33-all with a jumper.  Danielle Weldon continued the run with a layup to give the Hawks their first lead since 5-4.  Mariah Coker added a layup before the Lions ended the run with a three-pointer, 37-36.

Danielle Weldon posted a layup and Brianna Copeland knocked down a triple to give the Hawks a 42-38 advantage.  Joanne Williams added to the advantage with a layup.  Lincoln tallied the final points of the quarter as the Hawks led 44-41.

Fourth Quarter:

After a pair from the stripe and a layup by the Lions, Jada Lee added a layup and Mariah Coker knocked down a triple before Kaylah Henderson added a layup to put the Hawks in front 51-45.

Jada Lee continued the attack finishing off the three-point play.  Lincoln would close the gap to 54-52 following the media timeout.  Danielle Weldon went 1-2 from the stripe.

Lincoln was able to knock down a three-pointer with 46.5 seconds left to even the score at 55-all.  Danielle Weldon powered through the contact with 33.8 seconds to hand the lead back to the Hawks.

The Lions had a chance to tie or take the lead but Mariah Coker came up with the defensive rebound and forced Lincoln to foul.  Despite missing the two free throws the Hawks held off Lincoln for the 57-55 victory.

UP NEXT

Chowan hosts nationally-ranked Virginia Union on Saturday, February 23 for the final regular season contest.  Jada Lee, Jordan Pettaway, Danielle Weldon, and Joanne Williams will be honored before the contest.  Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
