WILSON, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team was unable to keep pace with the Barton Bulldogs in the second half as 15 blocks by the Bulldogs handed the Hawks their fifth straight defeat in Conference Carolinas action on Tuesday evening.

Mariah Coker led the Hawks with 15 points, scoring 10 of those in the first quarter. Olivia Gaither added eight points, while Aniah Patterson scored seven points.
Destiny Robinson hauled in a team-high eight rebounds.
The Hawks shot 27.5% in the contest and 23.3% in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Chowan started off strong as Jahkeria Bagby rejected the first attempt of the contest by Barton. Bagby would go down the court and score the opening basket of the contest.
Demetria Bland and Mariah Coker added buckets early as both teams exchanged points. Jahkeria Bagby netted two free throws to give the Hawks an 8-7 lead early.
Following a three pointer by the Bulldogs, Demetria Bland netted a layup during an offensive stall by the Hawks. Barton continued their run of 12-2 while holding the Hawks scoreless for over four minutes. Mariah Coker ended the run with a layup to close the gap to 19-12.
Mariah Coker continued to chip away at the deficit with two triples before the end of the quarter. Barton pushed their advantage to 24-18.
Second Quarter:
Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple off an assist from Mariah Coker to start the quarter. Coker added a layup and a triple to give the Hawks a 26-24 advantage.
Barton would regain the lead with a 9-0 run, 33-26, as the Bulldogs held the Hawks scoreless for another four-plus minute stretch.
Olivia Gaither ended the run with a layup out of the media timeout to spark a run for the Hawks. Aniah Patterson went 1-2 from the stripe and Demetria Bland added a layup to cut the deficit to 33-31. Keibra Hopkins went 1-2 from the stripe to aid in the run.
Barton ended the run with a three-point play to push the lead back to four, 36-32. The Bulldogs added a layup to lead 38-32 at the half.
Third Quarter:
Barton's pressure inside continued to be a problem for the Hawks as errant shots early allowed the Bulldogs to push their lead to double-digits. Barton used a quick 10-0 run to lead 46-32 to force a timeout. The Bulldogs would push their run to 15-2 as Jahkeria Bagby recorded the first bucket for the Hawks in the half with a putback. Teylahna Green ended the run with a layup but the Bulldogs countered with a triple on the other end.
The Bulldog's continued to push their lead forward as Barton led 61-36 before Emaree Hinton added a layup to end the scoreless drought. Hinton added another layup to add to her total. Barton increased their lead to 65-42 prior to the fourth quarter. Kaylah Henderson recorded a layup before the buzzer.
Fourth Quarter:
Kaylah Henderson ended a 2:44 scoring drought in the quarter with a layup. Barton answered with a three pointer to lead 70-44. Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple to continue the scoring for the Hawks.
Brianna Copeland connected from deep to cut the deficit to 71-50. Aniah Patterson knocked down a pair of three pointers for the final buckets for the Hawks in the contest.

Chowan takes a trip to Spartanburg, S.C. before the holiday to take on Converse in a Conference Carolinas contest on Thursday, December 19. Tip-off is slated for 12pm.
