Cold Second Half Shooting Denies Hawks Win On Road

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team led for most of the contest but a late rally by UNC Pembroke saw the Hawks' lead slip away in a 55-51 loss in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Olivia Gaither recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds.  Demetria Bland led all scorers with 25 points. 

Teylahna Green chipped in with nine points and five rebounds.  Mariah Coker was held scoreless but contributed with a season-high seven assists.

The Hawks went cold in the second half shooting 15.0% going 4-30 from the floor.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

After five quick points by the Braves, Teylahna Green put the Hawks on the board with one of three treys.  Green added her second triple to give the Hawks a 6-5 lead.

UNC Pembroke took a 7-6 lead before a 6-0 run led to a 12-7 advantage for Chowan.  Demetria Bland started the run with a jumper followed by an Olivia Gaither layup and a pair of freebies by Bland.

The Braves answered the run with a 6-0 run of their own to lead 13-12.  Teylahna Green knocked down another triple to hand the lead back to the Hawks.

Demetria Bland and Keibra Hopkins added a bucket to give the Hawks a 19-13 lead heading to the second quarter.

Second Quarter:

Demetria Bland started off the quarter with the first five points to push the lead to double digits, 24-13.  Bland added another bucket and Olivia Gaither added a jumper to keep the Blue and White in front, 28-21.

Olivia Gaither and Brelynn Young added a bucket each before Demetria Bland nailed a jumper at the buzzer taking the Hawks into the locker room with a 34-29 advantage.

Third Quarter:

UNCP kept the Hawks scoreless early in the half with a 6-0 run to regain the lead 35-34.  Demetria Bland put the Hawks on the board with a free throw to even the score.

Demetria Bland connected from the floor for the first time in the half with a three pointer as both teams struggled from the floor in the quarter.

The next bucket would take 3:43 off the clock as Demetria Bland knocked down another triple to lead 41-35.

The Braves added three free throws to cut the deficit to 41-38 at the end of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Emaree Hinton started the quarter with a pair from the stripe.  Olivia Gaither added a pair midway through the quarter to give the Hawks a 45-41 lead.

UNCP continued to stymie the Hawks down the stretch as an 8-0 run by the Braves was the difference in the contest as the Braves led 49-45 with 3:55 remaining.

The first basket from the floor for the Hawks would come with 2:45 remaining by Olivia Gaither with an old-fashioned three-point play.

The Braves pushed their lead to 55-48 with several free throws in the final minutes of the contest.  Demetria Bland added a three pointer with 28 seconds left as time ran out on the Hawks.

Chowan will step back into Conference Carolinas action as the Hawks travel to Belmont, N.C. to take on the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey on Tuesday, December 3.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm.
