MURFREESBORO, N.C. – In a contest that featured 96 free throws and 64 fouls, the Chowan Men's Basketball team was able to pick up the overtime victory against Lincoln in CIAA Northern Division action on Wednesday evening, 89-85.

Demetrius Sanders led the way with 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for the double-double. Michael Kelly posted 14 points on 5-5 shooting.
Gus Rowland, Brandon Mayhan, and Xavier Young notched 12 points each, while Trejvon McFail tallied 11 points and nine rebounds. Young scored all of his points from the charity stripe.
Chowan went 34-53 from the free throw line with 50 rebounds. Lincoln went 1-27 from behind the arc in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Gus Rowland posted the first bucket of the contest for the Hawks. Demetrius Sanders knocked down a three-pointer to trail 6-5 early. Lincoln went on a 9-2 run to lead 15-7 before Coach Brett Vincent emptied his bench.
The Hawks went on an 11-2 run to take the lead 18-17. Demetrius Sanders started the run with three quick points. Ta'Sean Young added his first collegiate basket in transition before Sanders knocked down a three-pointer to even the contest at 15-all. Young added another a layup to give the Hawks the advantage, 18-17.
Xavier Young would convert all three free throws to keep the Hawks ahead 23-21 before Michael Kelly added a layup and Trejvon McFail added a triple to lead 28-23.
After three points by Deon Joyner, the Hawks would hold on to a slim lead. Xavier Young and Brandon Mayhan added points from the stripe to lead 37-31 at the halftime buzzer.
Second Half:
The Hawks continued to get points at the stripe as the first five points of the half came at the stripe. Trejvon McFail tallied the first bucket for the Hawks to lead 44-38.
Gus Rowland and Trejvon McFail knocked down triples and Michael Kelly added a putback and a free throw to lead by double-digits, 53-42.
The Lions responded with an 8-2 run with the Hawks' points coming at the stripe by Xavier Young to cut into the deficit 55-50. Trejvon McFail added a pair at the stripe before Demetrius Sanders added a jumper to keep the Hawks in front.
Lincoln would even the score at 61-all midway through the half. Brandon Mayhan posted a layup to hand the lead to the Hawks. Demetrius Sanders knocked down a three-pointer and Michael Kelly posted back-to-back layups to give the Hawks a 71-65 advantage.
Gus Rowland and Brandon Mayhan tallied two points each to keep the Lions at-bay, 78-70. The Lions ended the half on an 11-3 run to force overtime. The Hawks had a chance to win it at the buzzer but the attempt was blocked at the bucket.
Overtime:
Lincoln went 1-2 from the stripe to start the overtime period. Brandon Mayhan would spark a 5-0 run to give the Hawks breathing room, 86-82. Demetrius Sanders added a layup during the stretch.
Lincoln added three points at the stripe, but the Hawks would answer at the stripe as well with two freebies by Xavier Young and one by Trejvon McFail.
