MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team was tripped up by the visiting Elizabeth City State Vikings in CIAA Northern Division action on Saturday afternoon at home.

Mariah Coker led the Hawks with 13 points and five rebounds. Jordan Pettaway and Brianna Copeland chipped in with eight points each.
Chowan struggled from the floor in the opening quarter shooting 21.4% but rebounded with 71.4% in the second quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Elizabeth City State jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after knocking down a pair of triples. Chowan missed their first three shots until Mariah Coker knocked down a trey at the 5:28 mark to trim the deficit in half, 6-3.
Joanne Williams converted from the stripe to draw the contest to 6-5. The Vikings would counter with an 8-2 run to lead 14-7 and force a timeout. Joanne Williams tallied a layup during the stretch.
Mariah Coker connected from deep out of the timeout before the Vikings led 16-10 after the opening stanza.
Second Quarter:
Brianna Copeland put the Hawks on the board in the quarter with a jumper in the paint. ECSU would push their advantage to 23-14 with a quick 7-2 run. Mariah Coker's jumper and a triple by Brianna Copeland closed the gap to 25-19.
Another 7-0 run by the Vikings push the deficit to double-digits. Destiny Robinson ended the run with a layup before the half, 32-22.
Third Quarter:
Danielle Weldon, Jahkeria Bagby and Jordan Pettaway knocked down jumpers to close the gap to 36-31 out of the locker room. The Vikings had the answer with an 8-0 run before Pettaway knocked down a three-pointer in tranisition.
The ECSU lead climbed to 11, 46-35, heading to the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
ECSU pushed the advantage to 16, 51-35, before Mariah Coker hit a three-pointer midway through the quarter. Coker hit a jumper in the paint before the media timeout to trim the deficit to 11, 51-40.
Brianna Copeland tallied a three-pointer along with a layup by Joanne Williams to cut the deficit to 12, 58-46, with under a minute to play. Danielle Weldon would hit a free throw in the final seconds.

Chowan will look to bounce back as the Hawks travel to Petersburg, Va. to face Virginia State in CIAA Northern Division action on Wednesday, January 23. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
