HAWKS' PROMISING START TO 2018
Chowan picked up their first win of the season 55-45 over McKendree in the home opener last weekend behind the performances of Bryce Witt, Paul Gooden, Donald Boone, and Dre Terry that earned them CIAA Player of the Week honors.
Bryce Witt and the offense put up 709 yards of total offense to break the school record. Witt threw for a school record 439 yards on his way to three passing touchdowns. Paul Gooden hauled in six receptions for 190 yards and two scores.
The Chowan defense led by Dre Terry, Antwuan Hicks and Josh Berry have created havoc so far on opposing offenses with seven takeaways. Dre Terry recorded 13 tackles in the win against McKendree.
Calvin Stephens, Marcus Devin and George Parker have picked off a pass this season. Stephens returned his interception for a 57-yd touchdown in the season opener.
Tyrell Freeman is averaging 16 carries a contest for 90.3 yards a game. Freeman posted his second straight 100+ yard performance on the ground with a season-high 123 yards last week. Bryce Witt has found a connection with Torry Baker, as the two have connected for three touchdowns on 19 receptions. Baker is averaging 100 yards per game.
BUCKING THE BRONCOS
It has been three weeks since Fayetteville State last played as Hurricane Florence kept students from returning to class until this week. FSU had their contest against Benedict canceled while the storm rolled through the Carolinas and then the contest against Elizabeth City State last week was canceled because of the aftermath with flooding in the area.
Two horse power, Stevie Green and Donshel Jetton, lead the Broncos with the ground attack. Stevie Green has averaged just under 100-yds a game on 31 touches. Donshel Jetton is averaging 7.6 yards a carry for 76 yards a game on 20 carries. The Broncos average 192.5 yards on the ground a game.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Chowan and Fayetteville State are deadlocked at 4-4 in the series. Fayetteville State squeaked out a 24-21 victory last season in Murfreesboro as the Hawks failed to convert the potential game-tying field goal. Prior to that, Chowan had won three straight in the series.
ON THIS DATE
Chowan has played twice on September 29 in the Division II era with one of those contest coming against Fayetteville State in 2012. In 2007, Chowan lost to UNC Pembroke, 26-20, before bouncing back in 2012 to defeat Fayetteville State 27-3.
