CU Volleyball Splits On Day Two Of Round Up II

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team split the second day of the CIAA Round Up II hosted by Winston-Salem State on Saturday.  The Hawks picked up a tough 3-2 win against Livingstone before falling to Johnson C. Smith, 3-0.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Kayla Gates posted a career-high 18 kills in the win over Livingstone.  Gates added six kills against Johnson C. Smith.

Micayla Pope posted a double-double against Livingstone with 38 assists and 13 digs.

Alyssa Born tallied 36 digs on the afternoon.  Sydney Hiner notched 16 digs against Livingstone.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chowan 3, Livingstone 2

Chowan jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the opening set against Livingstone.  Kayla Gates and Sydney Hiner picked up kills to start off the attack.  Alyssa Born tallied two service aces to force a Blue Bear timeout.

The Blue Bears closed the gap to 12-7 but Courtney O'Keefe shifted the momentum back to the Hawks.  A slew of errors allowed the Hawks to soar to a 20-8 lead.

Sydney Hiner and Kayla Gates tallied a kill each to wrap up the opening set 25-16.

The Hawks would take a 2-0 set lead taking the second set 25-20.  The Hawks would lead 8-4 early on kills by Kayla Gates and Sydney Hiner.

Kimberly Evans would double up the Blue Bears with a service ace before Courtney O'Keefe rejected a Livingstone attempt.  O'Keefe posted two service aces to lead 19-8.

Livingstone would go on a 9-1 run to close the gap to 20-17.  Kayla Gates would put down two kills to shift the set back to the Hawks.  Gates would end the set with a kill to take the set 25-20.

Momentum would shift in the third set as Livingstone led 10-3 early.  Chowan started chipping away at the deficit as attack errors by the Blue Bears and a block by Breona Young and Milica Vejnovic closed the gap to 14-11.

The Hawks would continue to rally but Livingstone would take the third set 25-20.

The fourth set would feature a back-and-forth set with the Hawks holding a 16-11 lead forcing a timeout by the Blue Bears.

Out of the timeout, Livingstone would rally to lead 19-17 to force a Chowan timeout.  Livingstone continued to push forward to take the set 25-19.

In the decisive fifth set, Livingstone led 10-6 midway through the set before a couple of errors allowed the Hawks to trail 12-9.  Sydney Hiner tallied a kill to force a timeout, 12-10.  Hiner posted a service ace to keep the rally moving.

The two teams would knot the match at 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18-all before Milica Vejnovic and Courtney O'Keefe posted back-to-back kills to end the set and match for the Hawks, 20-18.

Chowan 0, Johnson C. Smith 3

The first set featured a back-and-forth early set as Chowan led 7-3 with kills by Alyssa Born and Sydney Hiner helped the attack.  The Golden Bulls rallied back with a 9-2 run to take the lead 12-9.

Kayla Gates closed the gap to 15-13 with a kill but a 6-0 run forced a timeout by the Hawks down 21-13.

Back-to-back kills by Sydney Hiner pushed the Hawks forward, 21-16, but JCSU took the set 25-19.

The second set would be tied early at 7-all.  Sydney Hiner, Courtney O'Keefe, Micayla Pope and Breona Young allowed the Hawks to lead 15-11.

Johnson C. Smith fought back to knot the match up at 15, 16, 17, and 18-all.  Chowan would lead 21-19 but the Golden Bulls would post five kills in the final seven points to take a 2-0 lead, 25-22.

The Golden Bulls started the third set with a 5-0 advantage.  Kayla Gates notched the first kill in the set for the Hawks at 6-2.

A service ace by Sydney Hiner and a kill by Milica Vejnovic closed the gap to 9-7.  JCSU would bounce back with a 6-0 run before Vejnovic ended the run with a kill.

JCSU pushed their advantage to 20-12 before taking the set and match, 25-15.

Chowan opens up CIAA Northern Division with a clash against Virginia State on Thursday, September 27 in Petersburg, Va.  First serve is at 6pm.
