Chowan Soccer Opens The Season On Thursday

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's and Women's Soccer programs open their 2018 slate on Thursday, August 30.  The Men's team will host Shaw in a non-conference contest, while the Women's team will travel to UNC Pembroke.

Men's Soccer

2018 PREVIEW
The Hawks open the season at home against Shaw.  Chowan finished the 2017 season with an 11-5-2 overall record and a 5-3-2 record in Conference Carolinas action.  CU is picked to finish second in the league in their second season as a member.

Lee Wattam returns as the leading scorer from last season with five goals and four assists.  Elliot Chadderton will look to continue to keep the ball out of the back of the net as the keeper allowed 1.24 goals per contest last season with eight shutouts.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

Chowan posted a 9-0-1 record at home last season.  The Hawks have compiled a 23-7-4 record at home under Coach Chris Whalley.  Under Coach Whalley, Chowan allows 0.82 goals per contest at home including 0.50 goals per contest last season.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
In their second season of Division II soccer, Shaw comes into the contest finishing their 2017 season with a 6-6-2 record.  Shaw returns their leading scorer from last season, Thilo Wilke.  Wilke scored 14 of the team's 34 goals last season.

Women's Soccer

HAWKS PROFILE
Chowan enters their second year in the Conference Carolinas after posting a program best 12-3-2 overall record in 2017.  The Hawks are picked to finish third in the league after finishing with an 8-2-1 record last season.

The Hawks return nine starters from last season including reigning Conference Carolinas Player of the Year, Carolina Lucci.  Lucci led the Hawks last season with 19 goals and 42 points.  Sabrina Henderson posted four goals and four assists to pace the Hawks behind Lucci.

Olivia Borer and company kept opponents at-bay all season allowing only 10 goals and a program best 0.57 goals allowed per contest.

SCOUTING THE BRAVES

UNC Pembroke finished the 2017 campaign with a 15-5-1 overall record and appeared in the NCAA Tournament after capturing the Peach Belt Conference Championship Title.  The Braves were picked to finish fourth in the PBC behind Preseason All-Conference selections Alexis Pittman and Gina Ryan.

Pittman led the Braves with nine goals last season.  Ryan allowed 11 goals with a 0.53 goals against average last season.
