MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Baseball team split a pair at home against regionally ranked Virginia State on Sunday afternoon.

Trent Brosdahl paced the Hawks at the plate with three hits including a home run and four RBI. Harry Markotay went 2-4 in the first game with a home run.
Julian Lopez and Marquise Lanier picked up four stolen bases each as Lanier picked up three hits with two doubles. Lopez tallied two hits.
Ryan Gallaccio picked up the win in the night cap tossing 5.1 innings. Vinny Puma pitched 2.2 innings in relief in the doubleheader recording three strikeouts and no hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One: Chowan 4, Virginia State 5 (9 innings)
Virginia State took a 2-0 lead after the opening frame after Cody Smith struck out two of the first three batters.
Harry Markotay started the bottom of the inning with a base knock to left but would be erased on a double play. Trent Brosdahl singled to bring home Julian Lopez who reached on a walk and swiped second to trim the deficit to 2-1.
Cody Smith settled in by striking out the side in the second and grabbing a 1-2-3 inning in the third.
VSU added a run in the fourth on two hits and a passed ball to extend their lead to 3-1.
Chowan would claw back into the contest in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back doubles by Marquise Lanier and Julian Lopez to trim the deficit to 3-2.
The Trojans would push the lead back to two, 4-2, as an error in the inning plated the run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Harry Markotay led off the inning with a solo blast to left center. Marquise Lanier and Nick Rose walked before Trent Brosdahl doubled to center field bring home Lanier for the tying run. Rose was cut down at the plate.
Virginia State homered to lead off the ninth inning to take the extra-innings victory. Marquise Lanier would walk and swipe second in the inning but would be left stranded.
Game Two: Chowan 10, Virginia State 4
Virginia State scored one in the first and one in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
Chowan responded with a nine run inning in the third to lead 9-2. Anthony Jefferson started off the inning with a bunt single and swiped second. Jefferson would come around to score on Marquise Lanier's single through the infield. Lanier would end up at third stealing both second and third before coming around to score on a throwing error by the catcher.
Julian Lopez drew a walk and stole second before doubles by Robert Williams and Corey Bolam to give the Hawks a 4-2 lead. The pitching change didn't affect the Hawks as Tyler Jones drew a walk and Trenton Lee singled to right to score Bolam. Anthony Jefferson doubled down the left field line to score Jones and Lee to extend the lead to 7-2. Trent Brosdahl capped off the inning with a two-run home run to left center to lead 9-2.
In the fourth inning, Nick Rose doubled down the first base line with one out before Robert Williams drew a full-count walk. Tyler Jones loaded the bases with a full-count walk but would be left stranded.
The Trojans would tack on two runs in the top of the fifth to trim the deficit to 9-4 as a walk, two wild pitches, and an error led to the VSU runs.
Chowan would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth as Anthony Jefferson started off the inning with a base hit. Trent Brosdahl was hit by a pitch before Jefferson swiped third. Brosdahl would be thrown out at second allowing Jefferson to score.
Vinny Puma shuts the door in the sixth with a runner at second base with a pair of ground outs. Puma pitched a flawless seventh inning.
