Chowan's Fast Start Thwarts Wolves Comeback, 12-11

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Chowan Women's Lacrosse picked up a program tying fifth win of the season with a 12-11 victory over Newberry after scoring seven first half goals to thwart the comeback on the road on Tuesday afternoon.

Tashana Barnett and Heather Orell tallied four goals each in the win.  Alexandria Hammonds recorded two goals while Briana Gonzalez and Leslie Escobar netted one goal each.

Mallory Dunker moved to 3-1 on the season in cage picking up seven saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Alexandria Hammonds put the Hawks on the board five minutes into the contest with a free position goal.  Newberry would respond five minutes later to tie the contest at a goal apiece.

Tashana Barnett would put the Hawks up for good at the 13:20 mark.  Less than 30 seconds later Heather Orell would find Alexandria Hammonds for a 3-1 lead.

After conceding a goal, Heather Orell scored before Newberry closed the gap to 4-3.

Tashana Barnett and Heather Orell would give the Hawks a 6-3 with a pair of goals.

Leslie Escobar scored the final tally of the half to send the Hawks into the half up 7-4.

Second Half:

The Wolves would close the gap to 8-6 as Heather Orell found the back of the net during the early portion of the half.  Orell pushed the advantage to 9-6 just eight minutes into the half.

Newberry trimmed the deficit to 9-8 before Tashana Barnett scored a man-down goal with 17 minutes remaining in the contest.

The Hawks and Wolves would trade goals as Briana Gonzalez scored a man-up goal with 6:51 remaining to keep Chowan in front 11-9.  Newberry scored 40 seconds later to trim the deficit back to one, 11-10.

Tashana Barnett scored an insurance goal with 2:38 left in the contest before the Wolves scored the final tally with just over a minute remaining.

Alexandria Hammonds corralled the ensuing draw control to seal the victory for the Hawks.

UP NEXT

Chowan will travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to face Converse in a Conference Carolinas contest on April 8.  Opening draw is at 12pm.
