CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team was unable to overcome a strong third quarter by nationally-ranked Virginia Union in the CIAA Women's Basketball Quarterfinals at Bojangles' Coliseum on Wednesday afternoon.

Joanne Williams and Danielle Weldon led the Hawks with 12 points each. Jada Lee and Dhyamond Crenshaw finished with 11 points. Lee grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Panthers held the advantage on the glass 56-42. Virginia Union kept the Hawks at-bay with a 31 point third quarter on 12-18 shooting.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Virginia Union started the quarter strong with a 6-1 start. Chantel Roberts knocked down a three-pointer to get the Hawks on the board from the field.
Jada Lee and Joanne Williams drew charges to keep points off the board by the Panthers. Jordan Pettaway hit a jumper in the paint along with a layup by Joanne Williams put the Hawks up 8-6 midway through the quarter.
With the score knotted up at 12-all, the Panthers went on a 7-0 run to force a Chowan timeout, 19-12, with 1:14 left in the quarter.
The Panthers connected from deep to open up a double-digit lead, 22-12, with 30 second left. Joanne Williams hit a jumper to end the quarter.
Second Quarter:
Jordan Pettaway led the hustle play to start the quarter as Pettway dove on the floor to lead the break. Kaylah Henderson tallied her first bucket in over three months on a layup to trail, 24-16.
Jada Lee hit a three-pointer from the wing to continue the Hawk attack. Joanne Williams cut the deficit to 28-21 with a layup at the midway mark of the second quarter.
Three quick baskets allowed the Panthers to push their lead back to double-figures, 33-21, forcing another CU timeout.
Out of the timeout, Joanne Williams finished down low to end the spurt. Jada Lee connected from behind the arc to close the gap to 37-27 with 37 ticks left.
Virginia Union led 38-27 at intermission.
Third Quarter:
The Panthers would take hold of the contest with a 31-12 outing in the third quarter to lead 69-39. Chowan shot 6-17 in the quarter as the Panthers connected on 12-18 from the floor.
Dhyamond Crenshaw hit three jumpers in the quarter as Chantel Roberts converted twice. Danielle Weldon added a bucket in the quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
Danielle Weldon took the lid off the basket in the fourth quarter with a layup at the 7:59 mark. Jada Lee added to the scoring to trim the deficit to 72-43. Weldon tried to spark a rally with a layup.
Kaylah Henderson forced a turnover allowing Danielle Weldon to connect from the elbow, 74-47.
Joanne Williams tallied a basket for the Hawks with 2:40 remaining in the contest. Danielle Weldon finished strong down low and completed the old-fashioned three-point play.
Jada Lee and Dhyamond Crenshaw posted buckets in the final minute but could not cut into the deficit.

Chowan ends their CIAA Tournament run in the Quarterfinals. The Hawks finished the season with an 19-9 overall record.
