Hawks Softball Takes One Against Mount Olive

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Softball team split a home doubleheader against Mount Olive on Wednesday, February 14, winning 8-7 and falling 12-0 in the night cap.

Lindsey Stigler led the Hawks at the plate going 3-5 with a home run and two RBI.  Shannon Buchanan, Haley Cooper, Brittany Parson, and Kris Neal tallied two hits each.

Brittany Parson had a three-run home run in the first game.  Shannon Buchanan and Kris Neal recorded doubles on the afternoon.

Shannon Buchanan picked up her second win of the season tossing 7.0 innings allowing seven runs (six earned) off 11 hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 8, Mount Olive 7

Mount Olive jumped on the board in the top of the first inning as the first three batters reached on bunt singles.  A groundout and a single up the middle brought home the opening runs for the Trojans to lead 3-0.

Mackenzie Taggart opened the bottom half of the inning with a single up the middle.  Haley Cooper drew a walk before a dropped infield fly allowed Taggart and Cooper to advance on the miscue.  Beth Walker hit a sacrifice fly to center for the Hawks' first run to cut the deficit to 3-1.

UMO looked to add on to their advantage in the second but an aggressive move by the Trojans allowed the runner to get cut down at the plate to end the inning.

The Hawks worked out of a jam in the top of the fourth and used the momentum in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.  Kris Neal started the inning off with a double down the left field line.  Lindsey Stigler drew a walk as pinch runner, Kelsey Sonntag, swiped second.  Brittany Parson sent a shot over the right center fence for the three run homer to give the Hawks a 4-3 lead.

Shannon Buchanan continued the rally with a double to right center to chase the Trojans' starting pitcher.  A passed ball allowed Buchanan to score as Miranda Glover was the beneficiary of reaching on the drop third strike.  Donya Salman singled up the middle to bring home Glover for the 6-3 advantage.

The Hawks tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Lindsey Stigler hit a two run home run to left field bring home Beth Walker, who drew a walk earlier in the inning.

Mount Olive cut into the deficit in the top of the sixth inning scoring three runs to trail 8-6.  The Trojans added a run in the top of the seventh but the Hawks held off the comeback stranding runners at second and third to end the game.

Game Two: Chowan 0, Mount Olive 12

Mount Olive jumped on the board for two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run.  The Trojans added another tally in the second and three in the third to take a 6-0 lead.

Lindsey Stigler picked up the first hit for the Hawks in the bottom of the second inning with a single to right center.  Kris Neal reached in the third on a single to left field.

The Hawks' best chance came in the bottom of the fourth inning as Haley Cooper singled to left to start off the inning.  Lindsey Stigler singled up the middle to put runners on first and second but would be left stranded.

UMO posted six more runs in the top of the seventh as the Hawks committed three errors in the inning.

Brittany Parson produced a single in the seventh but the Hawks were unable to scratch across a run.

UP NEXT

Chowan heads to Florence, S.C. to compete in the Francis Marion Invitational for a four game tournament.  The Hawks will face Queens (N.C.) on Friday, February 16.  First pitch is at 3pm.
