Chowan WBB Falls To Virginia State On Road

PETERSBURG, VA. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team suffered a 72-68 loss to Virginia State in CIAA Northern Division action on Saturday afternoon on the road.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Chantel Roberts notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Roberts tallied a career-high six steals in the contest.

Jada Lee and Dhyamond Crenshaw netted 13 points each.  Joanne Williams scored eight points and nine rebounds on the afternoon.

Chowan outscored Virginia State 27-15 in the third quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Chowan opened the game on a 5-0 run as Chantel Roberts knocked down a trey to start the contest.  Dhyamond Crenshaw followed with a layup.

The Trojans would counter with an 11-1 run to take the lead 11-6.  Jada Lee ended the run with a triple.

Virginia State continued their attack to lead 19-11 at the end of the opening quarter.  Joanne Williams tallied the final basket for the Hawks in the quarter.

Second Quarter:

Virginia State posted a 7-0 run to start the second frame to lead by double-figures, 26-11.

Chantel Roberts and Danielle Weldon teamed up with a basket each to halt the run.  The Trojans widened the gap to 34-19 before Dhyamond Crenshaw connected from the field to end the drought with 2:10 left in the half.

Jada Lee chipped in with four points converting on a three-point play.  The Hawks trailed 39-25 at the half.

Third Quarter:

Chowan came out of the half on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to five, 39-34.  Joanne Williams sparked the run with a layup.  Jada Lee tallied two buckets along with a Chantel Roberts triple.

The Trojans would keep the contest in their favor despite the Hawks' attempts to take the lead.  Danielle Weldon knocked down a jumper with two freebies by Dhyamond Crenshaw cut the deficit to 47-45.

Chantel Roberts connected from deep and Mariah Coker hit a jumper to tie the contest at 52-all with 30 seconds left in the quarter.

VSU led 54-52 heading to the final stanza.

Fourth Quarter:

Chantel Roberts knocked down a three to open the quarter to give the Hawks their first lead of the contest, 55-54, since the first quarter.

Virginia State countered with a 7-0 run to regain the lead and never hand it back, 63-57.

The Hawks trimmed the deficit to two, 66-64, after Mariah Coker, Joanne Williams, and Dhyamond Crenshaw converted from the floor with 3:08 remaining.

Chantel Roberts would cut the deficit to two once again, 68-66, with 30 seconds remaining but the Hawks were unable to complete the rally falling 72-68.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home for three straight home contests starting on February 12 against Johnson C. Smith.  Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
