ELON, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team held strong against Division I Elon in an exhibition for the Hawks on Wednesday evening on the road before ultimately falling 88-74.

Mariah Coker and Danielle Weldon tallied 20 points each. Coker connected 6-9 from deep while Weldon shot 8-10 from the floor. Weldon added eight rebounds.
Jada Lee and Olivia Gaither chipped in with 13 and 11 points respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Both teams traded baskets early as Mariah Coker knocked down a trey to put the Hawks on the board. Danielle Weldon would follow up with a put-back to end the score at 5-all.
Jada Lee and Mariah Coker tallied the next nine points for the Hawks to stay even with the Phoenix, 14-all.
Mariah Coker gave the Hawks a 19-16 lead with a triple before Danielle Weldon's layup evened the score at 21-all. Elon led 23-21 after the opening quarter.
Second Quarter:
Elon went on an 8-3 run to start the quarter as Olivia Gaither's three-pointer was the lone bucket during the stretch.
After a lull by both squads, Olivia Gaither tallied a bucket along with a triple by Kaylah Henderson closed the gap to one, 30-29, midway through the quarter.
The Hawks continued to keep pace with the Phoenix as Mariah Coker knocked down a three-pointer to end the half as Chowan trailed 40-34 at intermission.
Third Quarter:
Danielle Weldon started the scoring for the Hawks in the half with a layup. Olivia Gaither trimmed the deficit to three, 42-39, with a triple.
Elon would push the lead to seven before Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple off a pass from Jada Lee. Mariah Coker connected from deep to cut the deficit to two, 48-46.
The Phoenix stretched the lead to nine as Jada Lee's jumper cut the deficit to seven, 62-55, heading to the final stanza.
Fourth Quarter:
A quick 10-2 run by Elon gave the Phoenix a double-digit lead. Jordan Pettaway and Danielle Weldon would cut the deficit to 10 on several occasions.
Elon extended their lead to 19, 86-67, before a 7-0 run by the Hawks sparked by Danielle Weldon's layup and a triple by Mariah Coker closed the gap slightly.
The Phoenix would convert from the stripe to end the contest.

Chowan will host CIAA newcomer, Claflin, on Saturday, December 1 in the CIAA opener for the Hawks. Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
