Weldon's Career Night Tames Lions On Road

LINCOLN UNIV., PA. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team rebounded with a 72-60 victory against Lincoln (Pa.) on the road in CIAA Northern Division action on Saturday afternoon behind Danielle Weldon's career-high 23 points.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Danielle Weldon paced the Hawks with a career-high 23 points on 8-11 shooting from the floor.  Weldon chipped in with seven rebounds.

Dhyamond Crenshaw tallied her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Joanne Williams hauled in 10 rebounds as well.  Jordan Pettaway chipped in with a career-high 11 points hitting three triples.

Chowan outscored Lincoln 19-12 in the third quarter to pull away.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Both teams scored early to open the contest as Mariah Coker and Dhyamond Crenshaw tallied buckets for the Hawks.  Lincoln scored five unanswered points to lead 9-4 at the media timeout.

Danielle Weldon snapped the skid with a three pointer before Jada Lee finished at the other end for a layup.  Weldon gave the Hawks an 11-10 lead with just over two minutes to play in the opening quarter.

Chowan and Lincoln would head to the second quarter tied at 12-all.

Second Quarter:

Lincoln opened the quarter on a 5-1 run before Danielle Weldon tallied two layups and two points from the charity stripe to give the Hawks an 18-17 lead.

The Hawks and Lions would swap the lead as Joanne Williams put the Hawks on top, 20-19.  Jordan Pettaway knocked down a trey to give the Hawks their largest lead of the contest, 23-19, but the Lions answered with a triple of their own on the next possession.  Pettaway continued the trend with another trey to lead 26-22.

Lincoln would regain the lead, 29-27, before Danielle Weldon knotted the contest up with a pair from the stripe.  Mariah Coker converted from the floor to hand the lead back over to the Hawks with just over a minute to play in the half.

Danielle Weldon went 1-2 from the stripe to send the Hawks into the half up 32-31.

Third Quarter:

Lincoln used a 6-2 run to take the lead as Chantel Roberts knocked down a bucket.  Chowan countered with a 13-1 run to take their largest lead of the contest, 47-38.  Dhyamond Crenshaw started the run with eight points along with five points from Jordan Pettaway.

Following a Lions timeout, Lincoln ended the Hawks' run with an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the deficit to six, 47-41, with 4:10 to play in the quarter.

Danielle Weldon and Jada Lee added to the Hawks' lead to end the quarter leading 51-43.

Fourth Quarter:

Chowan opened the quarter on a 9-0 run to swell the lead to double-figures, 60-43, and force a Lincoln timeout.  Chantel Roberts and Jada Lee knocked down the first two shots for the Hawks to start the quarter.  Danielle Weldon and Dhyamond Crenshaw tallied baskets to aid the run.

The Lions countered with an 8-0 run forcing a Chowan timeout with 5:38 remaining in the contest, 60-51.  Lincoln's run continued after the timeout connecting on the front end of the three-point play.

Danielle Weldon and Jada Lee pushed the lead back to double-figures with a put-back basket and layup respectively, 64-53.  Joanne Williams tallied back-to-back baskets to hold off the rally by the Lions.

Mariah Coker picked up two points from the stripe as Danielle Weldon tallied the final basket of the contest from the floor.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home for Braves Hawks Day to face nationally ranked Virginia Union on Saturday, February 3.  Tip-off is slated for 1:00pm.
