Chowan ended up on the short end of the stick in the opening weekend falling to Fayetteville State 24-21 at home. Freshman Quarterback
Bryce Witt was named CIAA Rookie of the Week for his performance going 17-28 for 257 yards and three touchdowns.
Nate Wyche anchored the defense with a team-high 15 tackles including 3.5 sacks and 4.0 tackles for loss on his way to being named CIAA Defensive Lineman of the Week.
Tyrell Freeman carried the ball 21 times for 166 yards. It was the eighth most yards in a single-game by a Hawks' running back.
The Hawks scored on their opening drive of the season and held Fayetteville State out of the endzone on their opening possession.
ABOUT THE STATESMEN
Delta State opened their season at home against Tarleton State with a victory, 34-16. The Statesmen scored their first touchdown of the season with a 100-yd pick six. DSU produced 208 yards on the ground to control the contest.
Statesmen running back Chris Robinson was named Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the Week posting 106 yards on 15 carries. Robinson found the endzone once.
DSU is a member of the Gulf South Conference and is receiving votes in the AFCA and D2 Football polls.
