MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Coming off their first win of the season, the Chowan Football team heads back out on the road to take on the winless Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls in Charlotte on Saturday, September 30.

ROAD HAS NOT BEEN KIND

The Hawks have traveled over 3500 miles this season before making the trek to Charlotte this weekend.  Chowan took tough losses to Delta State and West Florida on the road as the Hawks are 0-2 away from Garrison Stadium.

YOUNG GUNS

Chowan is led by freshman gunslinger Bryce Witt, who has accounted for all 11 touchdowns this season.  Witt has thrown 10 touchdowns and picked up one on the ground.  The rookie has eclipsed the 1000 yard passing mark so far this season.

Redshirt sophomore, Michael Offutt Jr., leads the Hawks in rushing with 238 yards and is third on the team with 129 yards receiving.  Offutt Jr. sparked the offense in the win over Livingstone with a program record 346 all-purpose yards racking up 189 yards on the ground.

Freshman linebacker, Dre Terry, has stepped up for the Hawks as the Roanoke Rapids native is sixth on the team in tackles and was named CIAA Rookie of the Week for his efforts against Livingstone.

WATCHING WYCHE

Senior defensive lineman, Nate Wyche, sits with 6.5 sacks on the season, good for tied for third in DII.  Wyche and company have the eighth most sacks in DII with 15.

The senior is tracking down former Chowan All-American, TJ Batchelor, for the career sack mark.  Wyche sits with 20 sacks on the season, just one behind Batchelor.

GEARING UP FOR THE GOLDEN BULLS

Johnson C. Smith is coming off a tough loss to Elizabeth City State in the opening contest of CIAA play for the Golden Bulls.  JCSU fell to ECSU 20-17 on the road.  The Golden Bulls fall to 0-4 on the season.

JCSU is averaging 11.0 points per contest while conceding 35.0 per game.  Quarterback Terrance Ervin leads the team in passing yards (378) and rushing (104).

The Golden Bulls offense has turned the ball over nine times including six throw the air.

LAST MEETING/SERIES HISTORY

Chowan holds the series advantage 2-1 with the Hawks winning the previous two meetings.  The Hawks are 0-1 inside Irwin Belk Complex as the Hawks return to Charlotte for the first time since the loss in 2008.

In the last meeting, Chowan took the victory 47-14.  The Hawks jumped out to a 33-0 advantage late in the third quarter.  Chowan racked up 650 yards of total offense behind 404 yards through the air.

COACH TO CURE MD
This weekend, coaches across the nation are participating in Coach To Cure MD.  Coach Place, as well as, JCSU's coach Kermit Blount will wear patches on their sleeve to raise awareness for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
