FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Points were at a premium as the Chowan Women's Basketball team picked up their tenth win of the season in a low-scoring affair, 57-53, against Fayetteville State in CIAA play on Thursday evening on the road.

Chowan was led offensively by Mariah Coker notching 17 points on 7-11 shooting and 3-4 from behind the arc. Danielle Weldon grabbed eight boards to go with her 11 points.
Dhyamond Crenshaw was held to 10 points. Jada Lee added nine points including 6-6 from the stripe. Chantel Roberts tallied a career-high 15 rebounds to pace the Hawks.
The nation's leading rebounding team gained the advantage once again on the glass grabbing 50 of the 87 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Chowan and Fayetteville State traded baskets early as Chantel Roberts and Dhyamond Crenshaw scored for the Hawks. The Broncos widened the margin to 12-6 gaining the advantage on the offensive glass.Â
A long lead pass from Jada Lee up to Danielle Weldon ended the spurt. Weldon drained a trey at the top of the key to close the gap to 12-11 and forced a Fayetteville State timeout.
Out of the timeout, Mariah Coker nailed a triple to give the Hawks their first lead of the contest, 14-12, with under a minute to play in the quarter.
The Broncos tied the contest up at 14-all heading to the second quarter.
 Second Quarter:
Mariah Coker started off the scoring in the quarter for the Hawks connecting on a triple from the corner. Chantel Roberts traded a basket with the Broncos to maintain the advantage before the Broncos converted the three point play to knot the game up at 19-all.
A strong defensive effort allowed Mariah Coker to hustle up court and knock down a long two to swing the lead back to the Hawks. Sydnee Neal added to the advantage with a pair from the stripe and a jumper to give the Hawks a 28-19 lead.
Fayetteville State ended the run with a two quick buckets after costly turnovers by the Hawks. Chantel Roberts tallied the final bucket of the half for the Hawks before the Broncos hit a three at the buzzer.
Chowan led 30-26 at intermission.
Third Quarter:
Dhyamond Crenshaw put the Hawks on the board in the second half with a bucket down low. Chowan's defense forced a couple of turnovers early in the quarter but was unable to take advantage of the miscues.
Jada Lee ended the scoring draught with a long trey as the shot clock expired to push the Hawks to a seven point lead, 35-28.
The Broncos closed the gap to 36-32 but Jada Lee found Mariah Coker in transition for the easy layup to push lead back to six, 38-32. Fayetteville State continued to trim the deficit late in the quarter cutting the Hawks' lead to two, 39-37 but Danielle Weldon finished at the other end.
Fayetteville State notched another late basket to trail 41-39 at the end of 30 minutes.
Fourth Quarter:
After a quick steal by Dhyamond Crenshaw, Mariah Coker extended the lead early, 44-39, knocking down a corner three that forced a timeout by the Broncos just 20 seconds into the quarter.
Dhyamond Crenshaw pushed the advantage to seven with back-to-back buckets with eight minutes to play. A floater in the paint by Mariah Coker allowed the Hawks to lead by nine, but a Broncos triple trimmed the lead once again.
The Hawks kept a seven point lead through the quarter with the Hawks dodging bullets as the Broncos struggled from the charity stripe.
Turnovers allowed the Broncos to cut into the slim lead to two, 53-51, with under a minute to play.
Jada Lee knocked down four straight free throws to give the Hawks a 57-51 lead with six ticks left. The Broncos added a pair from the stripe but was not enough as the Hawks won 57-53.

Chowan will put their winning streak on the line in the final road contest of 2017 as the Hawks face St. Augustine's on December 18 in Raleigh, N.C.
