Hawks WBB Cage Mars Hill In Courtyard Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –  The Chowan Women's Basketball used a strong second quarter to run away from Mars Hill in a 72-46 non-conference contest to open the Courtyard Classic hosted by Converse on Friday afternoon.

Dhyamond Crenshaw tied a school-record 11 field goals on her way to 23 points.  Mariah Coker and Chantel Roberts chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Joanne Williams notched her third straight game with double-digit rebounds hauling in 15 boards.

The Hawks produced 28 offensive boards to outrebound the Lions 64-42.  Chowan dominated the paint scoring 40 points inside and held the Lions to six points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

The Hawks jumped out to an early 10-0 run spanning the first five minutes of the quarter.  Dhyamond Crenshaw opened the contest with two straight baskets.  Jada Lee, Mariah Coker, and Danielle Weldon chipped in with a basket each before the Lions scored.

Chowan limited Mars Hill to one made basket in the quarter as the Lions went 3-4 from the charity stripe.  The Hawks went 6-19 from the floor in the quarter to lead 14-8 after the first 10 minutes of action.

Second Quarter:

Chowan would open the contest up to double-figures (26-14) as Chantel Roberts knocked down back-to-back threes.  Mars Hill would close the gap with two triples of their own before Jordan Pettaway hit a three from the wing to push the advantage back to 29-20.

The Jordan Pettaway triple sparked an 11-2 run that spanned the remainder of the half as the Hawks led 37-22 at the half.

Chantel Roberts posted back-to-back buckets for the Hawks as Dhyamond Crenshaw and Jada Lee got into the action with jumpers to end the half.

Third Quarter:

The Hawks and Lions traded points to open the half as Jada Lee hit a jumper to start the scoring for the Hawks followed by Mariah Coker knocking down a three to push the lead to 42-27 just two minutes into the half.

The contest would hit a lull with either team connecting from the floor until Mariah Coker hit a jumper after the media timeout.  Coker and Dhyamond Crenshaw would score a basket as the Hawks outscored the Lions 16-12 in the quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Dhyamond Crenshaw gave the Hawks a 55-34 advantage hitting a layup to start the final stanza.  The Lions would add four free throws to their total to keep the contest under 20 points.

Six straight points by Dhyamond Crenshaw pushed the margin to 19, 61-42, forcing a Mars Hill timeout with 4:34 remaining.

Jada Lee found Joanne Williams on a fast break followed by a fast break basket by Dhyamond Crenshaw to put the Hawks up 65-43 with 2:28 to play.

Danielle Weldon connected from behind the arc and inside the paint to wrap up the contest for the Hawks.

Chowan will finish the Courtyard Classic in Spartanburg, S.C. against Columbia International on Saturday, November 18.  Tip-off is at 1pm.
