CU Volleyball Falls In Round Up Finale To Broncos

OXFORD, Pa.- The Chowan Volleyball team saw their winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon as the Fayetteville Stats Broncos defeated the Hawks 3-1 in the CIAA Round-Up finale.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Kayla Gates paced the Hawks with her first collegiate double-double registering 11 kills and 13 digs.  Courtney O'Keefe added 10 kills.

Bailey Zavala and Alyssa Born recorded double-digit digs in the match with 24 and 14 respectively.

Karisa Patterson and Milica Vejnovic tallied four service aces each.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st Set: Chowan 19, Fayetteville State 25

The Broncos opened the match with a 9-2 run forcing a Hawks timeout.  Courtney O'Keefe registered a kill to open the match before the run.

Chowan started chipping away at the deficit on three kills by Brittany Tschida to cut the score to 13-8.

Down 18-10, Milica Vejnovic sparked a Hawks rally to force a Broncos timeout at 19-16.  Vejnovic started the rally with a kill.  Karisa Patterson served up back-to-back aces before Vejnovic served up an ace to force the timeout.

Out of the timeout, Fayetteville State regrouped to push their lead out to 23-17.  Kills by Kayla Gates and Brittany Tschida drew the Hawks closer but the Broncos were able to take the set.

2nd Set: Chowan 25, Fayetteville State 21

The Hawks and Broncos swapped points in the early portion of the set as Chowan received kills form Kayla Gates, Courtney O'Keefe and Brittany Tschida.

With the score tied at 10, Kayla Gates recorded five of the next six Hawks' points via the kill to give Chowan a 16-12 advantage.

Two service aces by Makayla Castro and a kill by Brittany Tschida pushed the advantage to 20-13, where the Broncos could not overcome.

The Broncos would cut the deficit to 23-20 after a block before Courtney O'Keefe and Milica Vejnovic notched the final two kills in the set to even the match at one.

3rd Set: Chowan 21, Fayetteville State 25

The Broncos would double up the Hawks early in the set at 10-5 after Kayla Gates recorded two kills to cut the early deficit to 7-5.

FSU maintained their advantage at 14-7 before Courtney O'Keefe sparked a run for the Hawks with two kills.  Makayla Castro followed with two kills and two service aces by Milica Vejnovic to knot the set up at 15-all.

Three straight points by the Broncos gave FSU the room they needed to fight off the Hawks attempted comeback.

4th Set: Chowan 11, Fayetteville State 25

Chowan posted their worst hitting percentage in the final set of the match with -.111 as the Broncos countered with their best of the match at .345.

However, Chowan started the set with four straight points grabbing two kills by Kayla Gates, one by Courtney O'Keefe and a service ace by Karisa Patterson.

The Broncos took the lead at 7-6 and never handed it back to the Hawks.  Back-to-back kills by Brittany Tschida and Milica Vejnovic cut the deficit to 10-9.

Fayetteville State ended the set and match on a 15-2 run as both Chowan points came on Broncos miscues.

UP NEXT

The Hawks will jump back into CIAA Northern Division play against Virginia State on Thursday, October 5 at home.  Virginia State is 4-12 on the season but 2-0 in CIAA Northern Division action.
