CU Volleyball Sweeps Vikings In CIAA Play

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball remained unbeaten in CIAA Northern Division play with a 3-0 sweep of Elizabeth City State at home on Thursday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Brittany Tschida and Kayla Gates led the Hawks with 13 and 11 kills respectively.

Courtney O'Keefe and Milica Vejnovic chipped in with seven kills and six kills respectively.

Karisa Patterson dished out 38 assists on the evening.  Bailey Zavala totaled 12 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st Set: Chowan 25, Elizabeth City 12

Chowan was staked to an early 7-4 lead after kills by Kayla Gates and Brittany Tschida.

Brittany Tschida notched back-to-back kills to extend the Hawks lead to 10-7.  The Hawks used the momentum to go on a 10-3 rally to put the set out of reach.

Three kills by Makayla Castro propelled the rally forcing an ECSU timeout.

Milica Vejnovic's two kills followed by Brittany Tschida and Kayla Gates recording a kill each wrapped up the opening set for the Hawks.

2nd Set: Chowan 25, Elizabeth City 17

The Hawks jumped out to a 7-2 lead grabbing four kills and a service ace.   ECSU rallied back after four Hawk miscues to bring the deficit to 13-11.

Kayla Gates pushed the Hawks lead back to four, 17-13, after a kill.  Brittany Tschida and Milica Vejnovic notched two kills each to push the Hawks to a 23-16 advantage.

Courtney O'Keefe and Cheryl Thomas finished the set with a kill.

3rd Set: Chowan 25, Elizabeth City 21

Both teams traded points until Kayla Gates gave the Hawks a 12-11 lead.  Elizabeth City would continue to fight back as the Vikings knotted the match at 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21-all.

Kayla Gates tallied two kills including the final one to give the Hawks the set and the match.

UP NEXT

The Hawks travel north to face Bowie State and Lincoln (Pa.) in CIAA Northern Division action on Sunday and Monday, October 15 and 16.
