Box Score MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University football team suffered a 47-14 setback to Campbell University on Saturday evening. The Hawks move to 1-1 on the year after dropping their home opener while the Camels move to 2-0 on the year and improve to 2-7 in road openers after the victory.
Campbell rolled up 543 yards over the course of the evening while holding the Hawks to 222. Jared Joyner tallied 11 carries for 90 yards and one touchdown while Darius Barnes added 15 carries for 62 yards in the victory. Elijah Burress completed 17-22 passes for 255 yards and tossed four touchdown passes for the Camels. Aaron Blockmon hauled in six passes for 172 yards including four touchdown receptions. Deontae Henderson paced Campbell with five tackles (three solo, two assisted).
Tyree Lee notched eight carries for 35 yards in the setback.
Randall Dixon completed 13-24 pass attempts for 156 yards including one touchdown pass for the Hawks.
Kaine Lombard tallied four receptions for 60 yards.
Nate Wyche led the effort defensively for Chowan with 10 tackles (seven solo, three assisted) with
Ahmond Gomez and
Randy Allen Jr. each accounting for eight tackles apiece for Chowan.
Campbell got on the board in their first drive of the game when Burress connected with Blockmon on a 31 touchdown pass. Mitchell Brown's point after attempt was good, leaving the Hawks trailing 7-0 after the first drive of the game.
Chowan promptly answered back when
Tyrone Carter hauled in a 72 yard touchdown pass from
Ryan Nolan to put the Hawks on the board.
Connor Killeen made good on the point after attempt to knot the score 7-7.
Campbell responded with 24 unanswered points; 17 in the first quarter, and 7 in the second to take a commanding 31-7 lead heading into halftime.
In the Camels' first possession of the third quarter, Joyner's 64 yard touchdown run pushed Campbell ahead 37-7. Down but not out, Hawks answered back on the next drive when Dixon heaved a 10-yard touchdown pass to
Edwin Thomas. Killeen's point after attempt made the score 37-14. Campell capitalized on a four-play, 84 yard drive on their next possession to pull away 44-14.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Brown drilled a 44 yard field goal to solidify the 47-14 win for the Camels.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, September 17
th as the Hawks play host to the University of West Florida. Kick-off is slated for 6:00pm in Garrison Stadium.
