Box Score BOWIE, MD- The Chowan University women's basketball team handed Bowie State University a 66-56 setback on Wednesday evening. The Hawks improve to 15-6 overall on the season and advance to 9-2 in CIAA play while the Lady Bulldogs slip to 9-12 on the year and 2-9 in league play.
Alisha Mobley led all players in the contest with 24 points in the game. She also hauled in 11 rebounds (four offensive, seven defensive) in the victory.
Dhyamond Crenshaw followed with 11 points in the contest along with seven rebounds (three offensive, four defensive).
Jordan Payne grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds (three offensive, nine defensive).
Kiara Colston paced the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points in the contest while Robin Heard added 13 points and 10 rebounds (three offensive, seven defensive).
The Hawks struck first in the contest with Mobley netting back-to-back baskets to give Chowan a 4-0 lead. Chowan maintained a narrow lead through the first quarter and held a narrow 16-14 advantage after the first ten minutes of play.
Chowan continued to build on the momentum in the second quarter; leading by as many as nine points before heading into halftime with a 29-24 advantage at the break.
The Lady Bulldogs came out firing at the start of the third quarter, using an 8-1 run to pull ahead 32-30 by the 5:36 mark. The Hawks kept battling down the final stretch of the quarter and used a jumper by Crenshaw to take a narrow 38-36 lead with 2:56 on the clock. Chowan and Bowie State exchanged baskets before heading into the final quarter with the scored tied 45-45.
The Lady Bulldogs held a 52-50 lead with 6:08 remaining in the contest before
Mercedes Tapia hit a three-pointer to give Chowan a 53-52 lead. The Hawks held on to the momentum and continued to build on the advantage, securing the 66-56 win with two made free throw by
Courtni Williams.
Chowan returns to the Helms Center on February 6
th to host Elizabeth City State University. Tip-off for the CIAA Northern Division contest is slated for 2:00pm.
