Hawks Fall Short in Regular Season Finale

Jordan Payne scored 17 points and hauled in 11 rebounds on Saturday.
Box Score RICHMOND, VA- The Chowan University women's basketball team fell to Virginia Union University 67-53 in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon.  The Hawks move to 19-7 overall with the season and post a 13-3 record in CIAA play with an 8-2 mark against divisional opponents.  Chowan enters the CIAA Tournament as the CIAA Northern Division runner-up while the Lady Panthers earn the title of CIAA Northern Division Champion with a 22-2 overall record, 14-2 finish in CIAA play and 9-1 divisional record. 

Jordan Payne recorded a double-double in the setback with 17 points and 11 rebounds (five offensive, six defensive) for the Hawks.  Courtni Williams added 12 points while Alisha Mobley added nine points for the Chowan Blue and White.

Kiana Johnson led all players in Saturday's contest with 23 points.  Lady Walker notched 20 points and 11 rebounds (four offensive, seven defensive) while Taylor White added 11 points and 12 rebounds (two offensive, ten defensive). 

 White opened the contest with a layup for the Lady Panthers before Payne answered with one of her own for the Hawks.  Two free throws by Johnson pushed Virginia Union ahead 4-2.  The Lady Panthers maintained control for the first quarter, leading by as many as eight points (12-4) after White's layup with 4:00 on the clock. Chowan fought to remain within striking distance, closing out the quarter with a 7-1 run to make the score 12-11 after the first ten minutes of play. 

The Hawks and Lady Panthers fought for control at the start of the second quarter, matching each other nearly basket for basket before Johnson's jumper at the 2:45 mark pushed Virginia Union ahead 27-21.   Johnson's three-pointer at the end of the second quarter for Virginia Union left the Hawks trailing 32-23 heading into halftime. 
John's three-pointer after halftime extended the Lady Panthers' lead to 35-23.  The Hawks were unable to recover from the momentum swing and trailed by double digit points for the remainder of the contest. 

With the regular season completed, Chowan heads to Charlotte, North Carolina to compete in the CIAA Tournament February 22nd-27th.  Bracket details and match-ups will be released as additional information becomes available.
