Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University women's soccer team earned a commanding 8-0-win over John Wesley University on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 8-5-1 on the season while the Lions drop to 5-4 on the year with the setback. The Chowan women's soccer team's eight wins marks the most victories for the program as members of NCAA Division II.
Rebekah Beal opened the contest with a goal for Chowan in the sixth minute of play. After a breakaway, she sent the ball far post from the top of the box, handing the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.
Kimberly Surio extended Chowan's lead less than three minutes later after scoring a goal near the crossbar. She sent the ball in from the top of the box using
Mackenzie Imamura's assist.
In the 16
th minute, Imamura connected with
Asia Fort, who beat John Wesley's keeper out of the box to score. Holding a 3-0 advantage, Beal scored her second goal of the contest on a shot far post. Surio was credited with the assist on the play. A mishandled shot by John Wesley's keeper led to a goal for Chowan's Imamura before the end of the first half. The Hawks continued to build on the momentum after the halftime break.
In the 65
th minute,
Madison Spain found the back of the net off of a cross from Fort to give the Hawks a 6-0 advantage. Less than ten minutes later, Surio scored a goal far post from the top of the box to push Chowan ahead 7-0.
Jaime Calcagno solidified the 8-0 win for the Hawks with less than one minute left in the game when she scored off of a rebound.
Chowan recorded 31 shots over the course of the contest led by Beal with seven shots. Spain and Imamura both tallied four shots for the Hawks with eight other Chowan players contributing to the shot count.
John Wesley was held to seven shots over the course of the competition. Jacky Rivas and Ashley Magallon each recorded two shots in the setback. Harley Cline recorded 10 saves in goal for the Lions.
Olivia Borer made one save in the shutout win with just over 67 minutes in goal.
Emily Duvall entered the contest in-relief and notched one save for the Hawks.
Chowan concludes the 2016 season on the road. The Hawks travel to Limestone College on October 22
nd and take on Columbia International University on October 29
th.
