Hawks Upend Livingstone in CIAA Crossover Play

Box Score AHOSKIE, NC-The Chowan University women's basketball team earned their third CIAA crossover win in as many contests with a 68-60 victory over the visiting Livingstone College Lady Blue Bears on Monday evening.  The Hawks improve to 10-5 overall with the win and advance to 4-1 in league play while the Lady Blue Bears slip to 8-6 overall and 3-2 against CIAA competition after Monday's setback. 

Wende Foster and Zena Lovette both scored 12 points apiece for Livingstone while Bria Patterson and Brittany Taylor each notched 11 points in the setback for the Lady Blue Bears. 

Mercedes Tapia and Courtni Williams drained a team-high 12 points apiece for the Hawks with Jada Lee adding 11 points in the win.  Dhyamond Crenshaw and Jordan Payne both grabbed seven rebounds for the Blue and White in the victory.

The Hawks rolled to a quick 5-0 lead at the start of the first quarter using a jumper by Mobley and a three-pointer by Tapia.  The Lady Blue Bears remained close on the Hawks' heels but Chowan maintained the advantage for the first ten minutes of play and carried a 19-13 lead heading into the second quarter.

Chowan continued the momentum into the second quarter, extending their advantage to as many as 13 points after Danielle Weldon's jumper with just under three minutes on the clock.  Shaikeyla Jordan's layup for Chowan at the buzzer left the Lady Blue Bears trailing 35-25 heading into the locker room at halftime. 

The Hawks extended their lead to as many as 17 points (44-27) in the third quarter but the  Lady Blue Bears closed out the quarter with an 18-5  run to make the score 49-45 heading into the final ten minutes of the contest. 

Livingstone opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 51-49 lead, (their first of the contest), before a three-pointer by Danielle Weldon shifted the momentum back in favor of the Hawks.  Chowan held on the advantage for the remainder of the contest, leading by as many as eight points before securing the 68-60 victory with Crenshaw's free throw.

The Hawks return to action on January 14th as Chowan travels to Saint Augustine's University to take on the Lady Falcons.  Tip-off for the CIAA crossover contest is slated for 5:30pm.
