Box Score MORROW, GA- The Chowan University women's basketball team handed Armstrong State University their first loss of the season after topping the Pirates 68-57 on Saturday afternoon. The victory snapped a three- game losing streak for the Hawks. Chowan evens their record to 4-4 after Saturday's contest while Armstrong State moves to 8-1 on the year.
Alisha Mobley led all players in the game with 18 points in the win while
Jada Lee and
Dhyamond Crenshaw added 15 points and 11 points, respectively.
Danielle Weldon hauled in 10 rebounds (six offensive, four defensive).
Jordan Payne notched eight points, six rebounds (six defensive) while tallying three steals.
Shermika Harris paced the Pirates with 17 points. Alexia Somerset notched 13 points while B'Kiya Webb accounted for 12 points, 13 rebounds (six offensive, seven defensive), and three blocks.
Harris opened the first quarter with a free throw to put Armstrong State on the board.
Mercedes Tapia answered with a three pointer and Payne followed with a jumper to push the Hawks ahead 5-1 by the 6:39 mark in the first quarter. The Pirates knotted the score 7-7 using a layup by Lexy Schoonover but a jumper by Lee led to a 9-3 run for Chowan, leaving Armstrong Atlantic trailing 16-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The Hawks and Pirates exchanged baskets at the start of the second quarter. Chowan held a 22-14 advantage with 6:14 on the clock before Crenshaw's free throw sparked a 9-2 run for the Hawks. The Pirates were unable to stop Chowan's momentum, resulting in a 35-22 lead for the Hawks heading into halftime.
Chowan refused to back down in the third and fourth quarters. Mobley's free throw with 7:38 left in the game gave the Hawks an 18 point advantage (58-40) and handed Chowan their largest lead of the game. Chowan had nine different players score over the course of the final two quarters to help secure the 68-57 victory.
The Hawks return to action on December 8
th to take on the University of Charleston. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
