Box Score ELKINS, WV- The Chowan University men's basketball team suffered their second consecutive loss on Saturday evening with an 89-83 setback to Davis & Elkins. The Hawks move to 5-3 on the season while the Senators improve to 3-4 after Saturday's contest.
Marco Haskins led the effort for the Hawks with a team-high 21 points and eight rebounds (six offensive, two defensive).
Tim Hewett added 17 points in the setback with
Kortez Smith and
Josh Mellette adding 15 points and 12 points, respectively.
Joe Goodwin scored 10 points while grabbing seven rebounds (four offensive, three defensive).
Kevin Bracy-Davis notched a game-high 24 points with Kevin Simpson tallying 18 points in the victory for the Senators. Wesley Sprinkle chipped in 14 points with Rickenjee Bellevue and Aleks Vasiljevic adding 12 points and 11 points, respectively. Bellevue also hauled in 17 rebounds (eight offensive, nine defensive) followed by Vasiljevic with 14 rebounds (five offensive, nine defensive).
The Hawks and Senators exchanged three-pointers at the start of the first half with Davis & Elkins earning an early 6-3 lead. Chowan played from behind until a jumper by Hewett knotted the score 13-13 at the 14:06 mark. The score was tied once more (15-15) with 13:26 on the clock before the Senators solidified their advantage to as many as 12 points (35-23). A three-pointer by
Andrew Lopez with 2:01 left in the first half cut the deficit to two points (39-37), but a basket by Bellevue and three-pointer by Vasiljevic left Chowan trailing 44-37 heading into halftime.
Kevin Simpson's three-pointer with 17:41 left in the game pushed the Senators ahead 54-42. Chowan answered with a 9-0 run capped by Haskins' three-pointer with 15:55 on the clock to put the Hawks within striking distance (54-51). Though Davis & Elkins remained in control, Chowan refused to go away quietly and stayed close on the Senators' heels through the midway point of the second half.
Mellette's layup with 10:53 remaining in the contest left the Senators clinging to a 65-62 lead. Davis & Elkins built their lead back to nine points (73-64) by the 9:14 mark after a three-pointer by Simpson. The Hawks were unable to steal the momentum away in the final stretch of the second half and suffered the 89-83 setback.
Chowan returns to action on December 8
th as the Hawks travel to take on Mid-Atlantic Christian University. Tip-off is slated for 8:00pm.
