Box Score SALISBURY, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team saw a five game win streak come to an end on Wednesday evening with a 64-63 loss to Catawba College. The Hawks move to 5-2 on the season while the Indians improve to 2-3 with the victory.
Kortez Smith led all players in the game with 22 points for Chowan.
Carlos Arroyo added 14 points in the setback while
Josh Mellette added 10 points. Arroyo grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Mellette added seven boards in the loss.
Four players scored double-digit points for Catawba led by Rakeen Brown with 12 points. Jordan Barber added 11 points while Jameel Taylor and Troy Warren added 10 points apiece. Vismantas Marikosius tallied a team-high six rebounds.
Smith opened the contest with two free throws for the Hawks. A basket by Julian Sampah followed by two made free throws by Andrew Ingram gave the Indians an early 4-2 advantage. Chowan and Catawba exchanged baskets before Warren's layup at the 13:32 mark gave the Indians a nine point advantage (16-7); their largest of the half.
Trailing 21-13 with 9:13 on the clock, Smith's jumper sparked an 8-0 run for Chowan, allowing the Hawks to pull within two points (23-21). Chowan battled to stay within striking distance and used
Marco Haskins' free throw at the 5:27 mark to knot the score 25-25. The Indians pulled away down the final stretch of the first half and led 37-32 at halftime.
The Hawks trailed by as many as 12 points (53-41) in the second half but mustered a 14-4 run to cut the deficit to two points (57-55). Brown ended the scoring drought for Catawba with a three-pointer but a basket by Mellette and layup by Arroyo left the Indians clinging to a narrow 60-59 lead with 2:25 left in the game. With the Indians holding a 62-61 advantage, Smith drained two free throws with 13 seconds left in the game to give Chowan the lead. The late rally fell short as Brown hit a jumper for Catawba with three seconds on the clock to secure the 64-63 win for the Indians.
Chowan returns to action on December 5
th when the Hawks travel to Davis & Elkins College. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00pm.
