Hawks Down Falcons

Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University men's basketball team earned their fourth straight win on Tuesday evening in an 85-75 victory over Saint Augustine's University in a nonconference match-up.

The Hawks improve to 4-1 on the season while the Falcons slip to 2-2 after Tuesday's setback. 

Anthony Gaskins led all players in the game with 24 points for the Falcons.  Andre Stanley added 12 points in the setback while Jeremy Saunders notched 11 points.  Quincy January drained 10 points for Saint Augustine's and Marquis Hines grabbed 10 rebounds (four offensive, six defensive).

Marco Haskins paced the Hawks in the contest with 23 points for the Chowan Blue and White. Kortez Smith added 21 points in the victory while Josh Mellette and Tim Hewett added 12 points and 11 points, respectively.  Jeremy Smith notched a team –high seven rebounds (two offensive, five defensive) while Mellette and Hewett grabbed six rebounds apiece. 

Chowan jumped to a quick 7-2 lead at the start the first half, establishing control right from the start.  With the score tied 20-20 and 8:47 on the clock, a made free throw by Haskins led to a 15-5 run for the Chowan Blue and White, leaving the Falcons trailing 35-25.

Kortez Smith's three-pointer with 34 seconds left in the first half pushed Chowan ahead 48-32 and gave the Hawks their largest lead of the game.   D.J. Chamblee answered with a three-pointer at the buzzer but Chowan carried a 48-35 advantage heading into halftime. 

The Hawks maintained a double-digit lead until a three-pointer and layup by Gaskins cut the deficit to six points (81-75) with 21 seconds left in the game.  Kortez Smith and Haskins both drained two free throws apiece to secure the 85-75 win for the Hawks. 

Chowan returns to action on November 30th when the Hawks play host to Mid-Atlantic Christian.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm in the Helms Center.
