Box Score COLUMBIA, SC - The Chowan University men's soccer team shut out the #2 seed Southern Wesleyan University, 1-0 on Saturday evening to claim the NCCAA South Region Championship for the first time in school history. The Hawks were the #4 seed in the tournament.
Chowan scored early in the first period to take control of the game when
Terell Williamson scored a goal in the 17th minute using an assist by
Ben Chapman. Chowan ended the first period with four shots while Southern Wesleyan had eight shots.The Hawks' defense kept Southern Wesleyan off the scoreboard, resulting in the 1-0 win for the Chowan Blue and White.
ver the course of the game, Southern Wesleyan outshot Chowan 22-6.
Marco Lujan made six saves in goal for the Hawks and recorded his third consecutive shutout win on Saturday.
Chowan's Williamson had two shots on goal during the game, while Chapman and
Christian Funes each accounted for one shot on goal for the Hawks. Ivan Malagon, Juan Agudelo, Michel Herszenhout, Sam Rowden, Fernando Posada, and Sebastian Castro each accounted for one shot on goal apiece for the Warriors.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 11-7-3 on the season while the Warriors end the year with an 11-7-2 record.
Chowan advances to the NCCAA National Championship scheduled for November 30th-December 5th, 2015 in Kissimmee, Florida. Additional details will be released as they become available.
