Box Score SHEPHERSTOWN, WV- The Chowan University women's basketball team handed the Shepherd University Rams a 72-57 setback on their own court on Wednesday evening. The Hawks improve to 2-1 on the season while the Rams slide to 0-3 after the setback.
Four Chowan players tallied double-digits in Wednesday's victory, with two notching double-double performances.
Jordan Payne led the way with 22 points and 17 rebounds (eight offensive, nine defensive) while
Alisha Mobley added 14 points and 11 rebounds (four offensive, seven defensive).
Danielle Weldon scored 13 points to aid the effort followed by
Courtni Williams with 11 points.
Jada Lee hauled in 11 rebounds (five offensive, six defensive) in her third collegiate start for the Chowan Blue and White.
Morgan Arden led the effort for the Rams with 13 points while Kristen Nunn added 12 points in the setback. Kari Lankford grabbed 12 rebounds (two offensive, ten defensive) in the setback.
Shepherd got on the board first in the contest using jumpers from Arden and Nunn to gain an early 4-0 lead. The Rams clung to a narrow advantage until midway through the first quarter when a steal by
Chantel Roberts led to a bucket by Mobley, handing the Hawks an 8-7 lead. Chowan escaped the first quarter with a 16-15 edge before building their lead to as many as eight points (25-17) in the second quarter thanks to a basket by Payne at the 6:45 mark.
A jumper by Payne gave the Hawks a 31-25 lead heading into halftime. The Rams pulled within two points (33-31) with 7:37 on the clock in the third quarter, but Mobley's basket on the Hawks' next possession sparked a 10-2 run for the Chowan Blue and White, leaving Shepherd trailing 43-33 with 4:41 on the clock. The Hawks closed out the third quarter with a comfortable 52-42 advantage after
Danielle Weldon's layup.
The Rams battled back to pull within eight points (61-53) by the 4:00 mark in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks pulled away down the stretch to earn the 72-57 victory.
Chowan returns to action on November 24
th as the Hawks host Indiana University of Pennsylvania in their home opener. Tip-off is slated for 2:00pm in the Helms Center.
