COLUMBIA, SC - The Chowan University men's soccer team clipped the #5 seed, Columbia International University, 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in the first round of play at the NCCAA South Region Tournament. The Hawk's are the #4 seed in the tournament.
The Hawks' game winning goal came in the first half within the first 15 minutes of play.
Ben Chapman beat the keeper out of the box and scored the lone goal off of an assist from
Tre Bonaparte Heading into halftime, the shot count was 6-1 in favor of Chowan. Neither team was able to score in the second half, resulting in the 1-0 victory for Chowan.
Jacob Rechenbach made one save in Wednesday's loss while
Marco Lujan tallied three saves in the shutout win for the Blue and White.
The Hawks had seven shots over the course of the afternoon and the Rams totaled nine shots in the setback. Daniel Miele, Nathan Greene, Jed Blanchat, Maksym Yakovenko and Braden Elmer each tallied one shot for Columbia International followed by Paul Grandacarpio and Mitchell Roberts with two shots apiece. Greene, Elmer and Roberts each had one shot on goal. Chowan's
Octavio Espino,
Terell Williamson, and Chapman all had one shot each, while
Swann Vincent and
Dylan Helm each tallied two shots. Vincent and Chapman each had one shot on goal.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 9-7-3 on the season and secure a spot in Thursday's semi-final contest.
The Rams end their season with a 7-9-1 record. The Hawks will take on the top seed, Emmanuel College, in Columbia, South Carolina at 7:00 pm.
