Box Score GREENSBORO, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team fell to UNC Greensboro 81-60 on Tuesday evening in exhibition play. The contest served as a regular season game for the Spartans and an exhibition contest for the Hawks. UNC Greensboro improves to 2-0 on the year while Chowan remains 1-1.
Hank Edmonds led the effort for the Hawks with 16 points in the setback while
Marco Haskins followed with 15 points for the Chowan Blue and White.
Jeremy Smith grabbed a team-high six rebounds (two offensive, four defensive) while Edmonds and
Marco Haskins each notched four rebounds.
Kayel Locke paced all players in the contest with 18 points for UNC Greensboro. Francis Alonso notched 12 points for the Spartans. Locke, Marvin Smith and Diante Baldwin each hauled in seven rebounds.
The Hawks rolled to a 7-0 run to start the game using a three pointer from Edmonds and baskets by
Jeremy Smith and
Josh Mellette. Chowan held on to the advantage until the 15:32 mark when RJ White's layup gave the Spartans a 10-9 lead. Both teams exchanged baskets with UNC Greensboro holding control until the midway point when
Joe Goodwin's three pointer pushed Chowan ahead 16-15.
A free throw by Alsono followed by Locke's jumper left the Hawks trailing 19-16 with 8:50 on the clock. The Hawks failed to regain the advantage and headed into halftime looking to battle back from a 35-25 deficit.
UNC Greensboro opened the second half with a 10-5 run, leaving the Hawks trailing 45-30. Chowan clawed their way back to cut the deficit to nine points (54-45) with 10:44 left in the game after Haskins drained a free throw, but White hit a jumper on the next play to restore a double digit leads to the Spartans. Chowan trailed by ten or more points for the remainder of the contest before falling to UNC Greensboro 81-60.
The Hawks return to action on Thursday when they host Piedmont International University in their first home game of the season. Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm in the Helms Center.
