Box Score INSTITUTE, WV- The Chowan University men's basketball team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday evening in an 86—81 win over UVA-Wise.  The Hawks even their record to 1-1 on the short season while the Cavaliers drop to 0-2.

Jeremy Smith led the effort for Chowan with 24 points and 13 rebounds (six offensive, seven defensive) in the victory.  Kortez Smith notched 22 points in the contest while Joe Goodwin tallied 16 points. 

Matt Day notched a game-high 31 points for the Cavaliers in the loss while Philip Owens II and Dimitri Sousa added 20 and 18 points, respectively.  Sousa hauled in a team – high eight rebounds (one offensive, seven defensive).

With the score knotted 2-2 early in the contest, a layup by Josh Mellette sparked a 9-3 run for the Hawks and resulted in an 11-5 advantage by the 16:58 mark.  Jeremy Smith's dunk with 14:17 on the clock gave the Hawks a double digit lead (21-10).  Chowan extended the advantage to as many as 23 points (42-19) before heading into halftime with a comfortable 50-35 lead.

The Cavaliers cut the deficit to seven points (53-46) early in the second half after a three-pointer by Owens.  Chowan refused to hand over the momentum though UVA-Wise threatened late in the contest.  The Hawks held a narrow 82-80 lead with 35 seconds left in the game.  Chowan and UVA-Wise exchanged free throws for the remainder of the second half before the Hawks secured the 86-81 victory. 

Chowan returns to action November 17^th when the Hawks travel to compete against UNC-Greensboro for an exhibition contest.  Tip-off is slated for 7:00pm.
