Box Score SETON HILL, PA- The Chowan University women's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season with a 60-56 victory against Seton Hill University on Friday evening. The Hawks embark on the year with a 1-0 record while the Griffins look to improve on a 0-1 start.
Jordan Payne led the effort for the Hawks with 21 points and nine rebounds (three offensive, six defense) while
Alisha Mobley chipped in 17 points and grabbed six rebounds (four offensive, two defensive) in the victory.
Lindsey Mifsud paced the Griffins with eight points for Seton Hill. Alexandra Hay and Hannah Laslo both scored seven points in the setback while Kinross Obiefule notched a team-high five rebounds (one offensive, four defensive).
Jenna Kaufman opened the contest with a layup for Seton Hill. Mobley answered with a layup for Chowan and
Chantel Roberts capitalized on two free throw opportunities to give the Hawks a 4-2 advantage at the 5:52 mark in the first quarter. Chowan extended their advantage to 9-4 before the Griffins fought back to regain a narrow 12-11 advantage with just under one minute remaining in the quarter. Mobley hit a layup for the Hawks just before the close of the quarter to give Chowan a 13-12 lead.
A basket by Payne and back-to-back layups by
Dhyamond Crenshaw extended Chowan's lead to 19-12 early in the second quarter. The Hawks extended their advantage to 21-15 by the 6:08 mark after Mobley's layup, but a 9-0 run by Seton Hill left Chowan trailing 24-21 with 2:10 remaining before halftime. The Hawks stayed close on the Griffins' heels but headed into halftime trailing 30-26.
Mobley hit a layup at the start of the third quarter to cut the deficit to two points (30-28). Trailing 33-32, a basket by
Jada Lee returned the advantage to Chowan. The Hawks and Griffins exchanged points throughout the third quarter before two made free throws by Mobley resulted in a narrow 45-44 lead for Chowan heading into the fourth quarter.
The start of the fourth quarter featured a fierce battle for control. With the score tied 49-49 and 7:04 left in the game, a layup by Mobley pushed Chowan ahead 51-49. Lee followed with a layup and free throw to extend Chowan's advantage to 54-49. Seton Hill pulled within two points (58-56) with 28 seconds left in the game but
Mercedes Tapia secured the 60-56 victory for the Hawks after making two free throws for the Chowan Blue and White.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday when they take on Slippery Rock University in the final day of play at the PSCA-CIAA Challenge. Tip-off is slated for 4:00pm.
