Box Score BOWIE, MD- The Chowan University football team dropped a critical CIAA Northern Division contest against Bowie State University on Saturday evening. The Hawks move to 4-2 on the season with the 17-14 setback and slip to 2-1 in CIAA play. The Bulldogs improve to 5-1 overall and remain perfect against league opponents with a 3-0 record.
Bowie State used a 34 yard field goal with 1:30 on the clock to take a late first quarter advantage. After a slow offensive start in the first half,
Tyree Lee gave the Hawks the momentum after capping a seven play, 56-yard drive with a five yard touchdown run to put Chowan on the board.
Nick Hahula made good on the point after attempt to push Chowan ahead 7-3 with 10:39 remaining in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs responded late in the third quarter when Trevon Bennett connected with Nyme Manns on a 12 yard touchdown pass to restore the lead to Bowie State. Christopher Palmer made good on the point after to leave the Hawks trailing 10-7 with 3:38 on the clock in the third quarter. Bowie State pulled away 17-7 heading into the fourth quarter after Bennett connected with Jamal Chappell on a 14 yard touchdown drive and Palmer made good on the point after attempt.
With 6:16 left in the game, Dixon connected with
Damian Ellis on a 30-yard touchdown pass to put Chowan back within striking distance. The pass capped a five play, 56 yard drive for the Chowan Blue and White. Hahula made good on the point after attempt to make the score 17-14. The Hawks held the Bulldogs scoreless on Bowie State's last drive. With 1:26 left in the game, the Hawks were in control of their own fate. Two costly penalties (intentional grounding and a false start) left Chowan out of field goal range on their own 28 yardline on 4
th and 8. After Dixon's incomplete pass, Bowie State took over on downs with 34 seconds left in the game, solidifying the 17-14 victory.
The Bulldogs tallied 295 offensive yards over the course of the competition while the Hawks totaled 237.
Dixon completed 17-32 passes for a total of 215 yards and one touchdown in the setback. He connected with five different Hawk receivers in the contest including Ellis four times for 82 yards and
Kaine Lombard four times for 36 yards. Lee led the Hawks' running game with 20 carries for 50 yards and one touchdown. He also hauled in three passes for 46 yards.
Defensively,
Wesley Bray notched eight tackles (three solo, five assisted) while Roderick Lyndsey and
Nate Wyche each totaled seven tackles for the Chowan Blue and White.
Bennett completed 21-32 passes for 152 yards for Bowie State and threw two touchdown passes in the win. Jefferson had 17 carries for 72 yards while Manns hauled in seven passes for 57 yards and one touchdown while Chappell tallied five receptions for 37 yards and one touchdown. Kevaugn Townsend led all defensive players in the game with 11 tackles (five solo, six assisted) followed by Brian Hall with eight tackles (five solo, three assisted).
The Hawks return to action on October 17
th to square off against Virginia Union University in CIAA Northern Division play. Kick-off is slated for 1:00pm in Richmond, Virginia.
